Lucton School has its very own riding centre set in 13 acres of beautiful North Herefordshire countryside. In addition, we have a range of well-schooled horses and ponies to suit all needs. Our staff are BHS qualified and registered. Whether pupils are complete beginners, competent riders improving their dressage, jumping and competition skills, or training towards professional qualifications, we

can help them improve their horsemanship in a friendly, encouraging and safe environment. In addition to riding, pupils learn to take responsibility for the care of their horses. Some combine working towards BTEC and GCSE qualifications in horse management & stable management with their other studies. Our sixth formers have the opportunity to study for the BHS Assistant Instructors Certificate.

Earlier this month, despite being cold it was thankfully a dry day at the NSEA Eventer Challenge at Kings Equestrian. We had a day of mixed results over a very technical and difficult course. The Grassroots 50cm class started well with a 2nd place for Sophie H and a 3rd for Ted R. The next class was the 60cm and the team won meaning that Henry H, Ted R, Sophie H and Mattie D have all qualified for the Grassroots Championships in December at Kings. Sophie H also won the class as an individual with Ted R 3rd, Mattie D 5th and Henry H 6th. Later in the day we had teams in the 70cm and 80cm with Freya L, Amelia J, Sophie D and Olie D.
In the 70cm our red team came 4th just missing out on the Hickstead qualification although many have already qualified. Amelia jumped a beautifully rhythmical round with Blaenpentre Poppyanna, but had a really unlucky 4 faults, Freya and Trooper went well. Sophie rode a fabulous steady clear on Conker and Olly and Prince Henry didn’t quite make the one corner to again have an unlucky 4. George Jones jumped one of the best rounds I’ve seen him jump but was just out of the places. In the 80cms George again jumped a lovely round with an unlucky 4 faults, Megan was pleased with her 8 faults as her horse jumped well. Olly jumped well again with a couple down and Hannah completed the team.

Dressage Success
Last weekend was a busy one for some of the Lucton School Equestrian Team! On Sunday morning we had a team competing in the NSEA Dressage County Qualifier competition at Kings. The team consisted of Freya Lawry, Megan Ferriday, Scarlett Barrett and Hannah Lawry and they all managed a lovely and accurate test. The team came 3rd and qualified for the NSEA Dressage Championships being held at Hartpury in April 2020. Scarlett also came 6th individually. Once that had finished it was a quick turn around back to Lucton for some show jumping training with local instructor Gary Morgan. The lessons were a great success and everyone really enjoyed them. We are now all looking forward to the Eventer Challenge at Kings this weekend which is a qualifier for the Championships at Hickstead in May 2020. We have quite a few pupils competing this Sunday with a team in the 50cm and 60cm, two teams in the 70cm and a team in the 80cm. Good luck everyone!

Pony Club Tetrathlon
Five Lucton pupils competed at The Area 10 Pony Club Tetrathlon qualifiers at Monmouth boys school.
Bea R, aged only 5 came an impressive 8th out of 25 competitors in the ‘Beanie’ class, which involves throwing bean bags onto a target followed by a 500 metre run. Oliver D, Ted Rogers and Arthur C all competed in the ‘Minimus’ class with some fantastic personal bests achieved in all three disciplines of shooting turning targets, running and swimming. Oliver D came 10th whilst Arthur C, who came 9th, qualified for the national Pony Club Tetrathlon finals in March. Sophie D competed for the first time in the ‘Junior’ class which involves shooting turning targets one handed, a 3 minute swim and a 1500m run. Sophie had personal bests in all three disciplines. It was a fantastic day, with Pony Clubs from all around the country competing against each other, but especially wonderful to see Lucton pupils performing so well in a very competitive field. Good Luck to Arthur in the finals!

Competition News
Kings hosted the NSEA Grassroots Show Jumping Championship at the end of last term and our fabulous 40cm team, consisting of Henry and William Hellyar and Ted and Bea Rogers came a satisfactory 6th place. Henry gaining an impressive individual 5th place out of 35 competitors. The 50cm team, Ted Rogers, Sophie Harris and Henry Hellyar did equally well but sadly missed out on any team prizes this time, but Henry came 5th for style. Sophie Harris had a cracking clear round on Poppy in the 60cm but missed the ribbons this time. Lots of potential here for the future but if anyone else would like to join the team, please contact the office.
