This year, Cats celebrates its big 3-0! 30 years of accessible transport; hundreds and hundreds of volunteers, passengers and vehicles. Thousands upon thousands of miles. In May, we had to refuse 21 different bookings because of the lack of drivers, peaking to 22 in April. This is either because there are no drivers in that person's area, our drivers are already on journeys, or they can't be in two places at once. These journeys include hospital trips, going to the doctors, going to support groups, and simply taking someone to the supermarket for 30 minutes to get their groceries. If you have a couple of hours a week to spare helping take people in your car or ours, please get in touch. 🌟 National Volunteers’ Week 2026 - Celebrating Saxmundham’s Volunteers 🌟

Coastal Accessible Transport Service (CATS) is a charity organisation offering community transport for all, especially those who might find it difficult to access traditional public transport. They rely on volunteers to provide vital transport links across the East Suffolk area.

CATS say “Our volunteers make the world of different, not only to us but to the passengers. We operate in a large area but only have a small number of volunteers to cover it. We get requests from so many people looking to get to medical appointments, shopping or meeting friends. The volunteers assist passengers; often giving emotional and physical support, befriending and speaking to them, most who haven't spoken to anybody else that day or week. They do more than just drive people, they go above and beyond.”

The government has increased mileage rates from 45p a mile to 55p a mile (effectively the wear and tear and fuel cost for volunteers using their own cars.) For instance, an average journey from Leiston to Ipswich Hospital will go up just over £4.
