Firework season
We have heard our first lot of fireworks over the last week or so. NOW is your time if you haven’t already started to plan.
Obviously, the two key days are Bonfire Night and New Year’s Eve. With Bonfire Night happening mid-week this year, many displays will be on weekends either side. But fireworks will be going off from now into January.
If you have a new dog, either a puppy or a re-home, and you aren’t sure how they will react
Edge on the side of caution. It’s better to be prepared.
If you have an elderly dog, especially those suffering from arthritis or joint pain, even if they haven’t shown signs of fear of loud noises before, a sudden jump could cause pain, which could lead to fear of loud noises.
Things to do:
Acclimatise your dog to loud noises. Put fireworks on YouTube, play a war film, gradually increasing the volume, and make it FUN!!! With lots of praise and high-reward treats, noise will then be associated with good things.
Make a safe den. Let your dog enter and leave a safe, quiet, dark space whenever they want.
Close blinds and curtains and play calming music or turn the TV volume up to drown out sound.
Natural herbal calming aids. We have a range of calming aids, including liquids, tablets, collars, or plug-in diffusers, available in store.
If your dog has a severe fear of loud noises or an underlying medical condition, speak with your vet as a stronger prescription medication may be the best resort.
If you need help with any ideas on how to calm your dog, looking for natural calming aids, or looking for long-lasting natural treats or high-reward treats, speak to one of the team, and they will be happy to help.
