Boundary training is one of the best things I can teach you that will help in a variety of situations. It helps reduce counter surfing, reactivity and separation anxiety, it teaches your dog impulse control which will help with recall training and most importantly teaches puppies when to rest to stop them becoming overtired and over aroused. Tommy here didn’t like his crate when we began but as you can see, with a little desensitisation and boundary training, he is quite happy staying put and relaxing in it with the doors open.

There’s a reason it’s called dog trainING. It’s an ongoing process. It’s not exactly a course we go through with our dogs and that’s it, done for life.

Even as a dog trainer and most professions, you continue your learning and education to keep progressing, gaining confidence in your skills and keep you on top form.

How many of us have forgotten the languages we learnt at school? 🙋🏼‍♀️ I haven’t used French or German since my school days so I can only really remember a few words. If we don’t keep training and practicing with our dogs those neuro-pathways won’t be strong enough to use the skills when we really need them.

Sometimes our dogs need a little refresher on the basics. Just the other week my baby dog Daiquiri needed to go back on the long line and have some reminders on her recall.

Our dogs enjoy training and the opportunity for reinforcement. We did breed them to do jobs after all!

Training is also a great way of mentally enriching our dogs and strengthening our bond with them. My goal is to train with my dogs every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes whilst I wait for the kettle to boil whilst making a cuppa tea, or incorporated into our walks and daily life.

Training is an ever evolving process, so enjoy the journey and make it a fun time for you and your dog!

What are you going to do with your dog over the weekend?

We're delighted to announce that the bill to increase maximum sentences for animal cruelty from six months to five years has finally passed through parliament! 🎉 Blue Cross has campaigned for this law, with other animal welfare charities, for many years and we are delighted that progress has happened. This law will now send a message that animal cruelty will not be tolerated.

Happy New Year’s everyone!
Even though we couldn’t go out this year I still managed to give myself a good hangover yesterday, hence the late post.

Now back to dog training, and getting Ted ready to meet clients again.
He’s always been an excitable lad, which is managed with lots of stimulation and coming to work with me. Because of this year and the things I need not mention he’s suffered a lack of socialisation, just like me to be honest! He now looks intently at dogs that he wouldn’t normally pay attention to, eager to go over and say hello. I’ve even heard a little whine when he sees one of his friends in the village that he’s not seen for a while. Because he walks to heel the frustration comes out as a whine, you may notice your dog display different behaviours when they feel frustrated such as beginning to pull more or beginning to bark.
In order to reverse this development I need to start some desensitisation methods and re introduce some focus techniques.
I will keep you all updated on our progress in my stories.

It was lovely to get some snow yesterday, but I do hate driving around in it so a small part of me is glad it had gone this morning.
Ted hasn’t been out in it for over a year, I don’t seem to remember getting any snow last year or earlier this year. The first snowdrop that landed on his back shocked him and he turned around surprised. Must have been a lot colder than the usual raindrops ❄️

Recall training this morning with this stunning lad. He’s very strong willed and not been off lead a lot but we got him showing far more interest after introducing some motivators 🐾
