I’m incredibly mindful when it comes to children and dogs, even with my own dogs, who I’ve raised from just a few weeks old. Safety, comfort, and respect always come first in my home.
I believe it’s just as important to teach children how to behave around dogs as it is to ensure dogs are comfortable and respectful around children. My little boy has been around dogs since the day he was born, and he’s being brought up to understand boundaries, space, and gentle behaviour.
That said, not every dog is suited to being around children and that is absolutely okay. Some dogs are higher energy, and others simply prefer a child-free environment. I never force interactions, and I carefully assess each dog to make sure they are only introduced if it’s appropriate and safe to do so.
For example, when calm and comfortable dogs like Buddy the lab come to stay, it’s so lovely to see them co-exist under my close supervision. Buddy is incredibly gentle and respectful of Oakley’s space, and Oakley is learning to mirror that calm, respectful behaviour in return. It’s absolutely lovely to see how happy it makes him just having a dog around him without feeling the need to force himself into their space.
The most important thing I ask from owners is honesty. If your dog has any behavioural quirks, concerns, or preferences, please just let me know. I will never turn a dog away for this, it simply allows me to make the right decisions to ensure your dog feels safe, happy, and properly catered for during their stay with me which is my highest priority ❤️
