Even the best plan can fail.
Not because it’s wrong –but because the process breaks down.

👉 Long-term outcomes depend on:
1. Owner involvement
• Clear home programs
• Realistic expectationsm
• Consistency over time

2. Continuous pain management:
• Pain changes over time
• Needs regular adjustment
• Impacts movement and recovery

3. Ongoing reassessment:
• Progress isn’t linear
• The plan should never stay static
• Objective tracking matters (gait, strength, endurance)

Bottom line:
Recovery isn’t about:
❌ One tool
❌ One diagnosis
❌ One fixed plan
It’s about:
✔ The right load
✔ At the right time
✔ Adjusted continuously
✔ With owner buy-in

That’s what restores movement – and keeps it.

With parts of Leicestershire set to hit 32°C this weekend – this is a reminder that this kind of heat can be dangerous for our dogs. ☀️

Even short walks in these temperatures can lead to heatstroke, burnt paws, and serious health risks.

🐾 If you're hot, they're hotter.

Instead of walkies, try some cool indoor enrichment, frozen treats, or gentle brain games to keep them entertained and safe.

This bank holiday weekend, let’s keep our dogs cool, calm and protected!

“Hip dysplasia.”
“Cruciate disease.”

Important? Yes. But not enough.

👉 Diagnosis is just the starting point.

What actually guides treatment:• Biomechanics (how they move)• Functional deficits• Compensation patterns

Example:Two dogs with cruciate disease:
• One needs stability work
• Another needs pain control + weight management first

And underlying everything:
Biology matters.
• Tendons/ligaments heal slower than muscle
• Overload too early → setbacks
• Underload → weak, unstable tissue

Which is why:
✔ Pain management must adapt
✔ Exercise must progress appropriately
✔ Reassessment is non-negotiable

Are we treating the label – or the system?

Massage. Stretching. Heat. Modalities.
They reduce pain. Improve tissue quality. Help patients relax.

But they don’t create lasting change on their own.

👉 Real recovery requires active retraining.
Because we’re not just treating tissue –we’re retraining movement, coordination, and control.
And progress depends on more than techniques:

• Pain must be continually managed (not just once)
• Owners must follow through at home
• Plans must evolve based on response

So we keep asking:
• What’s the main issue – pain, weakness, instability, compensation?
• What stage of healing are we in?
• What’s limiting progress today?

Good rehab isn’t a protocol. It’s clinical reasoning in motion.

We often get distracted by tools.
Water treadmill. Swimming. Laser. Shockwave. Ultrasound.
Yes they help with pain and healing. But they are supportive, not the main drivers of recovery.

👉 Movement is.

And even that only works when it’s:
• Progressive (not too fast, not too slow)
• Specific to the condition
• Done consistently

But here’s what’s often missed:
✔ If pain isn’t managed → movement won’t happen properly
✔ If owners aren’t consistent → progress stalls
✔ If we don’t reassess → we keep applying the wrong stimulus

Because the body adapts based on load + biology.

Rehab isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing the right things at the right time.

Are we focusing on what truly drives change?

Skittles came to us for physiotherapy after her spinal surgery.

At her first session, she preferred to stand for treatment – but it didn’t take long before she felt completely at ease. In all her following sessions, Skittles was so relaxed she happily lay down for her laser therapy.

We’re so proud of the excellent progress she’s made and the amazing recovery she’s achieved!
