⚠️Conservatory Warning⚠️

😳On a hot day, a conservatory is hotter. Twice as hot to be exact!

🐾Keep them cool and safe this summer by
avoiding the conservatory trap.

☀️Whether it's scorching outside or just warm,
remember: pets deserve shade, water, and a
comfy indoor oasis.

☀️HEATSTROKE☀️

🆘🥵🆘Please DO NOT take your dog for a walk in this heat, it is not worth the risk🆘🥵🆘

⛔️❗️Even a ‘quick’ walk can be too much!

🖐🏻Remember hot pavements can burn paws! If it’s too hot to hold your hand down on, it’s too hot for your pet!

🐾📞If you are concerned your pet might have heat stroke please do not delay and phone your veterinary practice ASAP for professional advice.

🐶DOGS🐶

☀️Make sure they have access to the shade if outdoors, ideally keep them inside.
☀️Have access to cool fresh water throughout the day.
☀️NEVER leave your dog in a car
☀️Use cool mats, fans, wet towels for your pet to lie on.
☀️Use pet safe suncream on exposed parts of your pets skin (tips of ears and nose). Especially if your pet has white/light coloured fur.
☀️Be careful if you have artificial grass, this can cause burns to your pets feet

🐱CATS🐱

☀️Offer them cool water and replenish frequently
☀️Ensure your cats do not get trapped in sheds, conservatory’s, garages or green houses
☀️Keep them indoors where possible, in a cool ventilated room.

🐰SMALL FURRIES🐹

☀️Ensure to keep their enclosure out of direct sunlight. Move the accommodation into an area that has plenty of shade and air circulation.
☀️Offer them marble/slate/tiles/concrete slabs to lay on. You can refrigerate these and they make great cool spots for them to sit on. Cool mats work too- however make sure they don’t get nibbled!
☀️Offer them fresh cool water to drink, and replenish regularly.
☀️Wrap a frozen bottle in a tea towel and place it in their pen, it may help to reduce the air temperature
☀️Try not to handle them/fuss them too much.
☀️Please be vigilant for cases of flystrike in your rabbits.

🦔WILDLIFE🐝
Spare a thought for wild animals. Keep bowls of water out for wildlife such as birds and hedgehogs!

Signs of heatstroke:
🥵Panting excessively
🥵Breathing difficulties
🥵Excessively salivation/drooling
🥵Vomiting (dogs & cats)
🥵Restlessness
🥵Collapse
🥵Seizures
🥵Red gums

❗️ALL animals are at risk of heatstroke, although some more than others. These include:

🐾Brachycephalic breeds (Pugs, Shih Tzu, French Bulldogs etc)
🐾Puppies
🐾Geriatric dogs
🐾Overweight dogs
🐾Dogs with thick coats
🐾Animals with underlying health conditions

🌡If you suspect your dog is showing signs of heatstroke⬇️

DO
✅Move your dog to a cool/shaded area.
✅ Gently use COOL not cold water over their body.
✅Offer them small amounts of water to drink
✅Call your vets immediately if you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke

DON’T
⛔️Do not cover their body with a wet towel, this will trap the heat in.
⛔️Do not force your pet to drink, as this may lead to them aspirating, and this can cause aspiration pneumonia.
⛔️Do not use COLD/ICE water, this can cool your pet down too rapidly leading to shock.

☀️Wet then vet = how you deal with a dog suffering from heatstroke.

🚿Quickly wet the dog with cool water around 15 degrees (not freezing cold). If not available, any water that is cooler than the dog’s skin feels.

💦Cool water, around 15°C, is ideal, but any water will help. If you only have soft drinks, ensure they don't contain xylitol, and avoid pouring them on
the dog's head. Wetting the dog will promote cooling through evaporation.

⏳Do this before taking them to the vet but don't spend too much time on it.

☎️Afterward, contact the vet and inform them about the situation and how long it will take you to arrive. This allows the vet's team to prepare for your dog's arrival and increases their chances of receiving prompt treatment.

🚫Avoid using wet towels on the dog as they can trap heat. However, specialised cooling vests that function through evaporation are suitable.

🥵Dog Heatstroke🥵

☀️Heatstroke cases in pets are all too common;
share the below far and wide!

☀️Many dogs get heatstroke when their owners take them out during high temperatures. Let's prevent heatstroke by knowing when it's safe to take your dog outside, and please contact us if you think your dog might have heatstroke!

💦And remember to keep your pets hydrated and are given plenty of shade.

🐾Enjoy the sunshine, but please keep tabs on your
pets

🤩Our June Braveheart winner is Lego!🤩

Lego has been coming to Broughton Vets since he was a puppy!🥺
Unfortunately, in June 2024 Lego came for an appointment after his owners noticed he was drinking a lot more💦. Lego had a blood test and urine test to see if there was a cause of this increased drinking, the results of which showed he had high calcium levels and high kidney values🩸Lego then had an ultrasound scan done and a re**al examination which found a lump on one of his a**l glands. A sample was taken from the lump and sent to the lab, these results showed that Lego had an apocrine gland a**l sac adenocarcinoma (a type of cancer)😢. Lego started medication to help try and control his calcium levels, and in late June underwent surgery to remove the cancerous lump🧑‍⚕️. Post-surgery Lego’s wound became infected and so he required extra follow-up checks and medication to get rid of the infection🧫💊. Since his initial diagnoses Lego has been attending the practice regularly for repeat blood tests and medication checks to try and rectify his calcium levels.
In March 2025 a second lump was found near Lego’s a**s. He underwent surgery to have this removed and the results came back as another apocrine gland a**l sac adenocarcinoma. Whilst in for his surgery another ultrasound scan was performed, this showed some abnormal areas indicating the cancer was likely to have spread😢. Lego healed well from this surgery and continues to attend the practice for monitoring of his condition.

❤️The team at Broughton Vets believes Lego is an extemely deserving winner of the Braveheart award given everything he has been through! Lego is a lovely boy and friendly with everyone when in for his many visits with us. He never shows complaint, he remains brave for every blood test, scan, and surgery. Lego is a true fighter and shows resillience every day!❤️

Please join us in saying WELL DONE LEGO!💙
