Meet the gorgeous Willow, this week’s superstar at Dogwood Referrals! 💖

Willow had a rare condition called Pes Varus, causing her leg to bend inward, something we occasionally see in dachshunds 🐶.

Working with Fusion Implants, we used custom-made guides to plan and perform surgery that straightened her leg with precision.
She’s now healing brilliantly and already back to her cheeky self! 💪💕

✨ Swipe to see her transformation!

Leave Willow some love in the comments!

Is your pet up to date on their parasite prevention treatment ?

With this wonderful weather☀️ we have been having it is only natural for us to want to venture out with our pooches 🐶 , this also goes for our outdoor cats 🐱 who may be venturing further too.

Unfortunately, parasites 🪰☀️ LOVE hot weather and thrive when our fur babies are out and about to attach themselves to! Therefore, it is important to keep on top of regular treatment to prevent them from causing any issues!

‼️ All preventative flea and worming sold at our practice is prescription only meaning that if your pet has not been seen by a vet in the last year, they will need to come in for a prescription check, but don’t worry you can collect your pet's treatment at the same time!

If you are unsure if your pet needs a health check, you can either call the practice on 0116 260 9565 or email us on [email protected] 🩵 🩵

‼️ SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE ‼️

With this warmer weather we are having we have had an influx of pets coming in with heatstroke.

On our previous post you can look at tips to keep your pet cool during warm weather.

☀️ Below you can find signs of early and progressive heatstroke:

Early Signs:

‼️ Excessive Panting: This is a primary indicator, especially if it's more than usual or occurs even when the pet is at rest.

‼️ Drooling: Excessive drooling, sometimes thick and foamy, is another common sign.

‼️ Red Gums and Tongue: The mucous membranes may appear bright red or even blue as the condition worsens.

‼️ Increased Heart Rate: You may notice a faster than normal heartbeat.

‼️ Restlessness or Agitation: The pet may appear anxious, pacing, or seeking out cooler areas.

Progression of Heatstroke:

‼️ Lethargy or Drowsiness: The pet may become sluggish, weak, and unsteady.

‼️ Vomiting and Diarrhoea: These can occur and may even contain blood in severe cases.

‼️ Mental Confusion: Disorientation, staggering, or difficulty maintaining balance may be present.

‼️ Muscle Tremors and Seizures: In advanced stages, the pet may experience muscle tremors, seizures, or even collapse.

‼️ Collapse and Unconsciousness: This is a critical stage requiring immediate veterinary attention.

If your pet is experiencing any of the above symptoms, please seek veterinary attention immediately, you can contact the practice on 0116 2609565 or in serious cases please make your way straight down to the practice.

“No dog has ever died from missing one walk, but dogs have died from one walk in the heat – don't take the risk”

This weekend the UK is due a heatwave with temperatures going up to 30’c 🥵

‼️ Heat stroke can leave significate damage on the brain and some cases can even be fatal ‼️

🐾 Here are some tips to keep your dog's cool this summer:

✅ Either walk early morning or late at night to miss the peak temperatures.

✅ Cooling mats can be bought online and kept in the fridge for your fur baby to sit on.

✅ Cooling jackets / vets can be worn during the day, however, please ensure to check this continuously as they start to warm up.

✅ Ensure cool water is always available.

✅ You can make doggy ice lollies with fruit and dog friendly fruit juice.

✅ It’s the perfect time to get the hose out to play in the water.

✅ Stay indoors and keeping blinds closed to stop the heat coming in.

✅ Frozen lick mats are a great for mental stimulation and to keep your fur baby cool

‼️ Remember, if the pavement is too hot for your hand it is certainly too hot for your dog's feet ‼️

We hope you all have a lovely weekend and stay cool ! 🩵 🩵

🎋 IT'S GRASS SEED SEASON 🎋

🌱 Grass seed's or Fox Tails are common plants found this time of year.

🌱 As harmless as they look, their little sharp bodies can get stuck between your dog's feet and embed themselves between their toes and cause some serious discomfort to your fur babies.

❓ Did you know that is some serious cases, grass seeds can embed themselves into your dogs paws and can track up their leg! There have even been cases where they have made their way into the lungs!

🌱 To prevent any grass seed injuries, it is important to check your fur babies feet after every walk to catch these pesky things before they cause some serious damage!

Over the last few weeks our practice has had an influx of birds, brought into us.

Not all birds need to be brought into us, so here is what to do if you find one :

🐥 If you find a hatchling (A baby bird with no feathers and closed eyes) see if you can locate a nest nearby and can gently place the hatchling back into the nest. If you are unable to locate a nest, your local wildlife rescue should be contacted. If you are unable to find a nest, please contact your closest vet practice or wildlife hospital but please ensure to contact them first before making your way down.

‼️ Hatchings require around the clock care, therefore is it important to try and contact either a wildlife rescue or a vet practice sooner rather than later to ensure the hatching has the best chance at survival. ‼️

🐥 If you find a fledgling (A young bird who has only recently left the nest and still has mostly baby feathers) they are learning to forage and fly but their mum is always watching and keeping a close eye. Unless the fledgling is in immediate danger, you can gently pick them up and put them safely under a bush or on the side. If the fledgling is safe, please leave them where they are.

🐥 If you find a juvenile bird (Has mostly adult feather and is more independent) they are still learning how things work. Some juvenile birds are not strong enough to fly like adult birds and sometimes can only flight to certain heights and not for long periods of time. It is often best to observe and leave them alone unless they are clearly injured or in immediate danger.

🐥 If you find an adult bird (Has all adult feathers and is fully independent) who has been in the same place for a long period of time, is unable to fly or has obvious injuries. Please contact your local wildlife hospital or your nearest vet practice.

🌱 For any wildlife concerns you can contact Leicestershire Wildlife Hospital on 07951 285366 or you can contact us on 0116 260 9565.

‼️ Please be aware, if you find any injured birds we are unable to come out to you and request the bird is brought into us, please ensure you call before coming down to us, so we are able to prepare accordingly ‼️

🌏 WORLD HEALTH DAY 🌏

🐾 Today is World Health Day, today is a global awareness day celebrated annually on April 7th, under the sponsorship of the World Health Organisation.

🐾 World Health Day is important to Veterinary Medicine because it highlights the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, emphasizing the crucial role veterinarians play in global health and well-being, especially in areas like public health, food safety, and zoonotic disease prevention.

🐾 Today we celebrate Veterinary Medicine and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the essential work that Veterinary Surgeons, Veterinary Nurses and Veterinary Laboratory workers do all around the world to help improve veterinary standards every day.

🌷Spring has officially sprung! 🌷

☀️ As the weather gets warmer, and we start to venture a bit further here are something you need to know:

🪻 If you find a Hatchling (a baby bird with no feathers) they have probably fallen out of the nest by accident. If you can see the nest, gently pick the hatching back up and place back into the nest. Alternatively, you can fill a box with shredded paper towel and fasten this to the tree. 🐦‍⬛📦

🪻 It is a myth that birds abandon babies upon human interaction! Just remember to wash your hands to avoid spreading diseases.

🪻 If you find a fledgling (a baby bird with feathers) it has most likely left the nest on purpose. While they can’t fly properly, a fledgling gets around well enough to avoid predators and find food. Mum is always close by keeping a close watch, so please leave them were there are. Please do not pick them up or disturb them unless they are in danger. 🩵

🪻 If you find an injured fledgling, please contact your local vet practice or Leicestershire Wildlife Hospital on 07951 285366 🦋🐰

🪻 Remember, springtime is lambing season! Please keep all dogs on leads while walking through any fields with sheep. 🐕‍🦺🐑

‼️ Sheep worrying is a criminal offence and you could pay a fine up to £1,000. ‼️

🪻 While calves are adorable, please keep all dogs on leads and ensure you stick to the public foot path. Pregnant cows or new mothers can be aggressive towards stranger and can cause injury!

🌷 Have fun this spring but remember to stay safe and keep our local wildlife and livestock in mind. 🌷🦋🐝🪻
