🦷🐴 Providing comfort through dental care 🐴🦷

A recent clients horse was showing signs of discomfort when ridden, throwing its head up when contact was taken and becoming unsettled when approaching a fence. Following an oral examination, a large ulcer was found on the inside of the cheek, caused by a very sharp enamel point.

After receiving dental treatment, the source of the discomfort has been addressed, allowing the ulcer to heal and helping the horse feel much more comfortable.

By removing oral pain and improving comfort, horses are better able to focus on their work and education under saddle.

Regular dental care plays an important role in your horse's health, welfare, and performance. Sometimes behavioural signs under saddle can be linked to discomfort in the mouth.

📅 June is almost fully booked, with only limited availability remaining. I'm now taking bookings for July, so please get in touch to secure your appointment.

Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption with hypercementosis (EOTRH) is a painful and progressive dental disease in horses that causes the part of the tooth below the gum line to be resorbed by the body.

Not all horses suffer from EOTRH, and the condition is mainly found in older horses, affecting an estimated 25–30% of horses over the age of 25.

Clinical signs of EOTRH include excessive plaque buildup around incisor or canine teeth, mouth pain, broken teeth, pustules in the gums, and aversion to haltering or bridling. If you notice these signs in your senior horse, contact your veterinarian for an examination. Treatment for this condition involves surgically removing affected teeth.

Incisors are one of the first things to be checked during a dental examination 🦷

Incisors play an important role in the very first stage of the mastication process, allowing horses to effectively grasp and cut forage.
These teeth can develop a range of issues such as fractures, excessive wear, missing teeth, or even foreign material like haynet fibres becoming trapped between them.

A healthy set of incisors helps your horse start the process properly and can impact overall comfort and digestion.

Regular dental checks ensure problems are spotted early and managed before they affect your horse’s wellbeing.

Meet Peaches! 🍑
Peaches was new to her owner Courtney just 10 days ago and had her first ever dental treatment today.
Courtney and I trained together at equine college over 10 years ago, so it’s a real pleasure to now be looking after her horse.
Peaches was an absolute star for her first visit. ⭐️
I am away for a few weeks from mid February so please get in touch if you want to book an appointment before then. 🦷🦄
