It’s grass seed season 🥴🌾
Lots and lots of grass seeds are about at the moment and can easily get caught in your dogs fur, as beautifully demonstrated by Effy here 🙃
Grass seeds are small, pointy seeds found at the top of long grass stems. They are often found in meadows and woodlands during the summer months and can easily brush off onto dogs fur. If not spotted and removed, they can burrow into the dog’s skin and get stuck in their paws, ears, eyes or nose. If your dog is injured by a grass seed, it can be very painful and the seed can travel around the body if it gets under their skin, making it very difficult to find 😢
How can you tell if your dog has been affected by a grass seed?
🌾 constantly licking their paws
🌾 has a painful swelling between their paws
🌾 limping
🌾 shaking their head
🌾 pawing at their ear or rubbing it against surfaces after a walk
🌾 suddenly and violently sneezing
🌾 has redness, swelling or discharge in their eyes
🌾 chewing or licking at a sore spot on their skin
How can I protect my dog from grass seeds?
🐾 check your dogs fur after walks and remove and seeds straight away before they get a chance to pe*****te the skin
🐾 keep the hair around your dogs ears and paws short to minimise the risk of grass seeds getting stuck in their fur
🐾 avoid areas with long grass
My Grandad’s golden retriever had to have major surgery after a grass seed got stuck up his nose, so I’m super vigilant when it comes to grass seeds as I don’t want any dog to go through what he had to go through 💔 whilst I do check every dog for any grass seeds, injuries or other foreign objects after each walk, please make sure you give them a more thorough check over yourselves when they’re cuddled up next to you in the evenings 🙏🏼
