I don’t like to buy projects and Sugar is exactly why!
Because I end up keeping them 🤣
When asked if I wanted a pony project, I said no! (I already own 3 that were bought as projects 🤣)
But unfortunately I also have the breaking strain of a soggy kitkat!
…So a week later, a pony I didn’t know much about, had never laid eyes on and obviously didn’t get vetted arrives at my yard! Surprise… now have fun working him out. All I really knew was that he’d stopped jumping, was very buzzy and anxious and had set about someone.
Well what a pleasant surprise, despite his little ways and being very buzzy, me and Sugar hit it off straight away, we seemed to just gel and have an understanding.
In the 11 weeks I’ve had him.
We’ve been hacking, on fun rides, XC ride, pub rides, pole clinics, jump clinics and some showjumping shows. We’ve had so much fun.
In my opinion he still loves his jumping, I don’t think he will ever slow down, he’s very buzzy by nature. The tricky bit is getting him to the fence in a good way! If you try to hold a slight bit too much he bounces, changes lead, gets disunited and throws his head, then ends up burying himself or if you let him go too much, you’ve no idea what stride he’s going to take, which leads to you then getting way in front or getting left well behind and pulling him in the mouth (all happening at 100mph) 🫣. I think this is what may have happened and with him being so sensitive, he’s gotten all confused and worried and therefore stopped jumping.
I’ve been trying my best to find the happy medium and learning to ride him in the best way possible, he’s also learning how I ride him too! I do my absolute best not to pull him in the mouth over a fence, even if this means I put myself in all sorts of weird positions to get over it 🤣 It seems to be working.
We won’t be jumping too big for the foreseeable, it’s all about confidence building and building that partnership. It’s by no means perfect yet but we are getting there and the most important thing is that we are both enjoying ourselves.
He’s the polar opposite to Ronnie, so that’s always fun going from one to the other at a show.
