We offer an abundant selection of wholesome, natural pet food and treats, sustainably sourced toys and accessories and an ever-growing range of raw dog food! We are an independent, family-owned pet store situated in the heart of Garforth, West Yorkshire. We first opened our doors back in May 2018, with a promise to deliver natural and ethically sourced pet supplies to our local area. We proudly fu

llfilled this promise with our large selection of 100% natural pet food and treats, sustainably sourced and fair-trade small animal/bird toys and large (and ever growing!) selection of raw dog food. We consider your pets as much a part of our family as they are yours, which means we'll never recommend products that we don’t believe to be in their best interests. Here at The Urban Pet Store we do not believe that dogs are 'just dogs'. With completely unique, individual and varying needs, we will always strive to go out of our way if it means helping you to find the perfect product for your individual pet. We have selectively chosen specific manufacturers whose ethics match our own, whilst offering quality products which contain only the best, natural ingredients. Whilst we are certainly dog mad, we do also provide a wide range of products for cats, small animals, wild birds and aviary birds. We do however support our local rescue centres and encourage 'Adopt Don't Shop!' ☝️

𝗖𝗮𝘁𝘀 𝗢𝗻 𝗩𝗲𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘀 - 𝗬𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗿 𝗡𝗮𝘆? 🐈‍⬛🥔🥦🚫

𝗡𝗮𝘆! In a world where more people are embracing plant-based lifestyles, it’s natural to wonder if our pets can do the same. I've had a couple of people asking me this week if we sell vegetarian cat food, so I feel it's important to address this topic! 😬 While dogs, with very careful planning and extenuating circumstances, can sometimes handle a vegetarian diet, cats are a different story. As obligate carnivores, cats have unique dietary needs that simply can’t be met by plants alone. Here’s why:

𝟭. 𝗢𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲

Cats are obligate carnivores, which means they must eat meat to survive. (The same as lions and tigers! 🐅) This isn’t a preference - it’s a biological requirement. Unlike omnivores, cats rely on nutrients found only in animal tissues. These include certain amino acids, vitamins, and fatty acids that are either absent or poorly absorbed from plant sources 🍃

𝟮. 𝗧𝗮𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲: 𝗔 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗡𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁

Taurine is an amino acid that cats need for heart health, vision, and reproduction. Unlike dogs and humans, cats can’t produce enough taurine on their own and must get it from their diet. Taurine is found almost exclusively in animal proteins. A deficiency can lead to heart disease (dilated cardiomyopathy), blindness, and other serious health issues 🩺

𝟯. 𝗩𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻 𝗔 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗰𝗶𝗱

Cats also need certain nutrients that are only found in animal products - specifically, vitamin A in its active form and arachidonic acid, a type of fat. Unlike humans, cats can't convert things like beta-carotene from plants into usable vitamin A, and they can’t make arachidonic acid from plant oils either. Without these essential nutrients, cats can develop serious health problems, including skin issues, a weakened immune system, and liver or kidney damage.

𝟰. 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀

Cats have a much higher protein requirement than most animals. Plant-based proteins simply don’t provide the complete amino acid profile or digestibility that cats need. While cats can eat some fruit and vegetables in small amounts, their diet should primarily consist of meat 🥩

𝟱. 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗰𝘁𝘀

Cats are natural hunters. Their entire physiology - from their teeth and digestive system to their behaviour - supports a meat-based diet. Trying to force a vegetarian lifestyle on a carnivorous animal goes against millions of years of evolution 🐈

While I understand the idea of a plant-based diet comes from a place of compassion, it's important to remember that true compassion also involves understanding and respecting an animal's natural needs. Cats were designed to eat meat - and they thrive on it. The healthiest, most ethical choice for our feline friends is to feed them a balanced diet that reflects their biology ❤️

If you've visited us before you'll have noticed that our shop has a strong family feel; it's bring your dog to work day most days at The Urban Pet Store, making it a very happy and cuddly place to be! We welcome all dogs into the shop... whether they are muddy, a bit grumpy or simply high on life!
