We believe the Government should take much more decisive action to accelerate the replacement of outdated animal experiments with cutting-edge, human relevant techniques.

And the Conservative Party leadership contest is a vital opportunity to make sure our next Prime Minister understands this urgent need.

30 scientists in the field of human relevant research have already written an open letter to Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss. This explained how New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), such as organ-on-a-chip and artificial intelligence, can benefit public health and the economy. They called for the candidates to take decisive action to support human relevant science, such as providing practical support for scientists and appointing a dedicated minister.

The Government should take much more decisive action to accelerate the replacement of outdated animal experiments with cutting-edge, human relevant techniques. I wrote to my MP to ask them to take decisive action to modernise medical research. Please join me.

York Council has condemned whale hunters TYR being hosted at the York Barbican in February. 👏🐋

The Leader of the Council, Keith Aspden, has written to the council venue contractor to inform that it does not support the band – whose members participated in and promote the whale hunt on the Faroe Islands – playing on its property.

Thank you to everyone who contacted York Council. Will York Barbican now pull the plug on the whale hunters?

URGENT ACTION - WHALE HUNTERS NOT WELCOME IN YORKSHIRE

A group of whale hunters who actively participate in the pilot whale slaughter on the Faroe Islands are set to headline a music festival at York Barbican on 20 February.

The venue is owned by City of York Council. Please send a polite email to the venue and the council leadership asking for the whale hunters to be dropped from the show.

The same venue is also hosting an oceans film festival, which is a great way to inspire people to protect marine line - something hosting whale hunters goes directly against.

SAMPLE LETTER:

Dear Councillors,

I write to celebrate the City of York Council-owned Barbican hosting an ocean film festival later this month.

There is little more powerful than seeing, through film, the mesmerising marine life and ecosystems which our oceans host. The film festival will no doubt leave many empowered to protect the world’s oceans – not least the waters close to home in Yorkshire, where visiting dolphins and whales leave those lucky enough to see them with a powerful experience.

I feel, however, that this valuable work is undermined by the York Barbican hosting the band ‘TYR’ during the ‘Jorvik Takeover’ in February.

The venue may not have been aware when booking TYR that band members actively take part in and publicly-endorse the barbaric pilot whale hunt on the Faroese Islands.

During the hunts, known as the ‘grindadrap’, these gentle sea creatures are herded by fleets of boats onto the island’s shores, where awaiting participants drive knives and lances into the whales’ bodies. What’s more, many of the whales take a long period to die from these painful injuries, with some suffocating from choking on their own blood.

The whale hunt, which takes the lives of hundreds of these intelligent creatures annually, has caused a global outcry from those who want to see cetaceans given the protection they so desperately need and deserve.

Surely, as a responsible and environmentally-focused council, York Council will ensure that TYR are removed from its venue’s list because of the involvement of the band and its members in this brutal whale slaughter?

I look forward to your response.
