Harper from is here to remind you to keep any eye out on your pets during this hot, humid weather! 🥵

It's so easy for dogs to overheat in this kind of heat, particularly out on walks so walking your pooch later in the day when it's cooled down can help. Even at 23c dogs are still at risk of heat stroke when walking. Your cat indoor or outdoor can also overheat quickly.

Some signs of heat stroke in dogs include:

🐶 Elevated breathing rates
🐶 Dry or sticky gums or an abnormal gum colour
🐶 Showing signs of lethargy or disorientation
🐶 Seizures

Heat stroke in cats is similar however, they can be more subtle, and show some of these signs:

🐱 Panting, which gets worse as heatstroke increases
🐱 Drooling
🐱 Restlessness, pacing etc
🐱 Bright red tongue or very red gums
🐱 Increased heartrate
🐱 Vomiting/Diarrhoea
🐱 Collapsing and lying down
🐱 Little urine production (you might notice litter trays are dryer than usual)

If your dog or cat shows any signs of heat stroke (hyperthermia) this is classed as a medical emergency and you need to get them to the vet as soon as possible. Don't delay in getting treatment for heatstroke, even if it looks as if your pet is recovering!

I get asked quite often why we ask for a vet referral before consultations or training, so I created a post which gives a bit more info on why it's so important for you to get your pet seen by a veterinary practice BEFORE we do a behavioural consult.

Not only does it help to rule out any medical reasons your pet might be displaying problematic behaviours but it also ensures that if there is a medical reason for a problem then it is looked at from both a medical AND behavioural perspective.

Remember, any good behaviourist or animal trainer will require this as it is a vital part of your pets overall welfare. 🐶
