The War Horse Memorial Charity has kindly sent us some beautiful knitted purple poppies.
The purple poppy is a symbol of remembrance for all animals that have served during wars.

Horses were used initially for cavalry units and to transport ammunition and supplies.
Mules and donkeys to transport supplies, they were known for their incredible stamina and ability to cope with difficult terrains.
Dogs were used for many tasks such as guard dogs, detecting mines, carrying messages and medical equipment.
Cats were used in the trenches and onboard ships to catch mice and rats, protecting food sources and the spread of disease.
Pigeons were used to carry vital messages over long distances.
The animals also became mascots and pets for the soldiers and sailors, providing much needed comfort and boosting their morale.

Next time you are in, have a look at our purple poppy display. Make a donation and pick up a knitted poppy.
Over the next few weeks we will be sharing more tributes to those brave animals "They had no choice"

Lovely Morgan was in this week to see Andreas, to have his beak trimmed🦜

The first picture is his before the trim, as he sits happily on Andreas shoulder ♥️
Morgan had a short anaesthesia 💤 to perform this procedure safely. Morgan's anaesthesia was monitored by the nurse throughout the procedure to ensure he was stable throughout.
Andreas carefully burred away some of the overgrown beak. Whilst he was waking up the nurse carefully trimmed his nails, so he had a full pamper!

The second picture is after the procedure, he is snuggled up to Andreas and testing out his burred smooth beak on Andreas top!

Many of you know Andreas has a very keen interest in treating birds and exotic species🦜🐢🐍🐔🐭🐹🐀🐇🦎 He continues to study and add to his knowledge with regular exotic and avian CPD (continued professional development).
It was lovely to see you Morgan 💚🩺

Sneak peek at our laboratory 🔬🦠🩸🧫💉

Our nursing team run lots of our diagnostic blood tests in our own laboratory. One simple blood test that we do for all of our inpatients is called a PCV and Total Solids.
This simple, affordable test gives us quick results.
It will tell us if your pet is anaemic and has sufficient red blood cells, this is called Packed Cell Volume (PCV). Total solids, this measure's the plasma proteins, fibrinogen, albumin and globulins. It will tell us how hydrated your pet is.

Diwali is almost here! 🔦

While the Festival of Lights is a special time for families, the fireworks can be unsettling for pets. A few ways to help them feel safe:

🎆Walk dogs earlier in the day before celebrations begin.
🎆Close curtains and play calming music to soften loud bangs.
🎆Create a safe space with their favourite blanket and toys.
🎆Make sure pets are microchipped and collars are secure, just in case they get startled.

If you know your pet struggles with fireworks, speak to us for more advice and support.

Emergency or not❓

A male cat is going in and out of his litter tray, he seems a bit unsettled and uncomfortable.
You have a look inside his litter tray and he is only managing to pass small amounts of urine.
The answer is.............. its an 🚨EMEREGENCY🚨

Any male pet, that is struggling to pass urine will need to be seen ASAP🚑

They could have a urethral obstruction / blockage, which is potentially life threatening emergency.
Having a urinary tract infection, bladder stones or muscle spasms can cause this. There are many contributing factors such as breed, obesity, diet and lifestyle of the pet.

Female pets are at a lower risk of an urethral obstruction as the urethrae is much wider than in males, allowing urine to come out.

Left untreated it can cause damage to the kidneys. OR cause the bladder itself to rupture into the abdomen. This can be fatal.

Frosty, was unable to pass urine due to severe muscle spasms.
Ultrasound pictures show his very full bladder, and a large blood clot within it.
A urinary catheter was placed while Frosty was sedated, so that the bladder could be drained safely. What a relief for poor Frosty💚
You can see the urine was bloody, the vet flushed his bladder with warm saline, to remove blood clots and any remaining urine
You can see the difference in colour by looking at the picture, the urine in the bag is a healthy colour.
Frosty's recovery did take a little while as he had another episode of spasms. Thankfully this is now under control and he is settled back at home on a strict diet.
