🌞🐶🐱 HOT WEATHER PET SAFETY – KEEP YOUR PETS COOL & SAFE THIS SUMMER 🐾💦
Warm days are great for adventures, but heat can be dangerous for our pets. With limited ways to cool down, dogs, cats, and other animals can quickly become overheated. Here's how to protect your pets during the summer months:
🚫 Never leave pets in parked cars
Even with the windows slightly open, car interiors heat up rapidly — becoming lethal in minutes. Always leave pets at home if they can’t come inside with you.
💧 Fresh water at all times
Make sure pets have plenty of clean, cool water available throughout the day. Place extra bowls in the garden or multiple rooms indoors, especially on hotter days.
🏠 Create cool, shaded areas
Indoors, keep curtains closed during the hottest parts of the day to block out the sun. Set up cool resting spots with fans, tiled floors, or damp towels. Outdoors, make sure there's plenty of shade in gardens or patios.
🔥 Protect those paws
Tarmac and pavement can get hot enough to burn paws. Test with the back of your hand for 5 seconds—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them. Walk during early morning or evening when it’s cooler.
🐾 Limit walks and exercise
Avoid midday activity. Overexertion can lead to heatstroke. Stick to short walks, and bring water with you when out and about.
🚿 Cool-down tricks
Use cooling mats or shallow paddling pools to help pets stay refreshed. Brushing them regularly also helps remove excess fur and keep them cool.
⚠️ Watch for signs of heatstroke
Stay alert to symptoms like:
- Heavy panting or drooling
- Lethargy or wobbling
- Bright red gums
- Vomiting or collapse
Act quickly—get someone to call your vet while you pour, hose, or if safe immerse your pet in cold water (only under constant supervision, ensuring their head is fully above water). Move them to a cool shaded area while you prepare to transport your pet to the vet in a cool, air conditioned car. It is important if using a hose to cool your pet that you ensure it has run through until cold, as water sitting in the hose pipe can be very hot. Do not cover your pet with damp towels as this traps the heat under the towel.
Let’s enjoy the sunshine responsibly and keep our pets happy, healthy, and safe! 🌿🐕
