As a dog care professional, when I hear “I love dogs” or “I love my dog”, I’m now very aware that this means different things to everyone.
As humans we are used to saying these words, just as words, without considering what they mean to different entities. And, in this case, how language alone can make us lazy in our actual expression of real love.
Think of a mother that says “I love my child”, but does not fulfil any of the other needs of that child. Offers lots of love and cuddles when there, but does not feed properly, does not socialise, does not educate. You can see how “love” in words may not be enough to create a healthy individual right?
Dogs are the same. You can say you love them, and you may love them when you’re there, but if you’re not there for 10 hours a day, no company, no outside space, no snacks, no stimulation, no connection, then we definitely understand different things out of love. 🙏🏼
Love to me innately shows itself in all the detail that goes into loving your dog. How much time are you actually investing in enjoying your dog’s company? Are you providing your dog with a routine, a structure, and a mutual understanding? Are you praising and rewarding correctly? Are you correcting compassionately or shouting and dominating when they make a mistake? Are you paying attention to your own accountability in behaviours that are showing up in your dog? Or is it “just the dog” for you?

Once you see their way as closely as people in the animal care industry do, you can never unsee it again. They’re not just “cute”, “trainable”, “playful”. That would be underestimating them.
They’re naturally mindful, open minded, incredibly observant, super empathetic, very curious, so instinctive, and can smell the mood from a million miles away.
As humans we often seem to forget that the first glimmers of empathy is curiosity. An empathetic person would naturally ask questions, engage actively and really wish to hear what you’ve got to say.
When you’re not feeling 100%, and your dog is staring at you intensely, or leaning on you, it’s because they’re scanning you for what’s happening for you. (I mean of course sometimes they just want the snack in your pocket that you hid yesterday.😆) But they’re curious because they care about you. ❤️ They are wanting to know what’s wrong.
And once you tasted this feeling with animals, not just dogs, it becomes so much easier to tell who is who in the human world. In this way, they’re my guide, not the other way around. I no longer take just words as facts; instead I trust my instincts more, and pay attention to detail.
Animals have taught me so much. I’m grateful to be learning from the best. 🙏🏼

Ps. Picture totally not relevant 😊 I just love little Murphy to the moon and back ❤️ He is the sweetest, most lovely little boy.

My new friend Missy 🌺

Belongs to my tattoo artist, who is also my first connection in this neighbourhood 🙏🏼 A wealth of knowledge when it comes to music, and an absolute joy spreader with his sense of humour.

I let myself in the other night, turns out he hasn’t even yet left. Time: 11pm! 😆
Level of Enthusiasm: 1000% 🤣
Luckily no baseball bats were involved 👏🏼

Loving this little kitty for its active playfulness and warmth. What a lovely new friend 🙏🏼

Fig 😎
German Shorthaired Pointer
He loves all doggies, chasing balls, snacks, cuddles and mummy so much!
What he doesn’t love is being alone, and I am hoping to show him that his own company is great as is, and that being alone is safe.

This one is not for the faint hearted. ❤️
His name is Loki, Dutch/German Shepherd cross, almost 2 years old.
He is an ex-police dog. Yes, one hears that and goes wooo but wait… 😆
Loki is great with every dog that I personally introduced him to. He is not just great, he is the best and the goofiest guy in every room. 🤣 This may just be the reason why his career ended with the police. 🤣🤣🤣👏🏼👏🏼
He is an insanely cute, gentle giant, who has a dark side. 👀
He destroyed his owner’s house, because she left him alone for a short while, and broke her wrist to get to other dogs out on a walk.
Why? Because after he went through a very task based lifestyle with the police, he then potentially ended up in a rescue centre for a while, and when adopted attended a daycare in Portugal clearly with no appropriate routine, stimulation, boundaries, space from other dogs, where he would potentially just play around uncontrollably all day, giving him three significant and very damaging changes in his routine and lifestyle.
Shepherds heavily rely on their routine, they need clever tasks to prove themselves and feel that they have achieved something for their owner.
In addition to this “daycares” with no boundaries, where dogs are left on their own or just free-play all day, develop really high expectations about what their social life looks like. Then when at home, however hard you try you will NEVER meet those expectations, leading to frustration, excessive demanding pulling outside and/or sometimes reactivity.
This is why here at Mine is Yours, every detail impacting on a dog’s psyche and home life is thought through very carefully.
They don’t just come here and get thrown into a pack of dogs. They have to wait until excitement levels are soothed (by me😊), then be given time alone with each dog first under very careful supervision and boundaries, then they can play together if everyone is cooperating. They HAVE TO take a break from the dogs to reset their nervous system, and learn to rest on their own, knowing that there are other dogs present in daycare.
They also have to practice under careful supervision, resting in the same room without breaching boundaries.
