This one is not for the faint hearted. ❤️
His name is Loki, Dutch/German Shepherd cross, almost 2 years old.
He is an ex-police dog. Yes, one hears that and goes wooo but wait… 😆
Loki is great with every dog that I personally introduced him to. He is not just great, he is the best and the goofiest guy in every room. 🤣 This may just be the reason why his career ended with the police. 🤣🤣🤣👏🏼👏🏼
He is an insanely cute, gentle giant, who has a dark side. 👀
He destroyed his owner’s house, because she left him alone for a short while, and broke her wrist to get to other dogs out on a walk.
Why? Because after he went through a very task based lifestyle with the police, he then potentially ended up in a rescue centre for a while, and when adopted attended a daycare in Portugal clearly with no appropriate routine, stimulation, boundaries, space from other dogs, where he would potentially just play around uncontrollably all day, giving him three significant and very damaging changes in his routine and lifestyle.
Shepherds heavily rely on their routine, they need clever tasks to prove themselves and feel that they have achieved something for their owner.
In addition to this “daycares” with no boundaries, where dogs are left on their own or just free-play all day, develop really high expectations about what their social life looks like. Then when at home, however hard you try you will NEVER meet those expectations, leading to frustration, excessive demanding pulling outside and/or sometimes reactivity.
This is why here at Mine is Yours, every detail impacting on a dog’s psyche and home life is thought through very carefully.
They don’t just come here and get thrown into a pack of dogs. They have to wait until excitement levels are soothed (by me😊), then be given time alone with each dog first under very careful supervision and boundaries, then they can play together if everyone is cooperating. They HAVE TO take a break from the dogs to reset their nervous system, and learn to rest on their own, knowing that there are other dogs present in daycare.
They also have to practice under careful supervision, resting in the same room without breaching boundaries.
