Fresh from the Nest at Doigh Nadair 🥚💚

Did you know unwashed eggs have a natural protective coating called the “bloom” (or cuticle)? This invisible layer seals the shell’s pores and helps protect the egg from bacteria naturally.

When eggs are washed, that protective layer is removed, making the shell more porous and reducing shelf life.

🥚 Unwashed eggs
• Can last 2 weeks–1 month at room temperature
• 3–6 months in the fridge

🥚 Washed eggs
• Must be refrigerated
• Usually last around 2 months

✨ Our best advice: keep eggs unwashed until just before you use them.

At Doigh Nadair, our eggs are placed in the shed daily as they’re collected fresh from the nesting boxes. The shed is completely emptied every Sunday, meaning any eggs you buy from us will never be more than 1 week old — much fresher than supermarket eggs, where best-before dates are often set 28 days from laying.

We have a lovely mixed flock here 🐓
Some are young ladies around a year old and laying beautifully, while others — like our beloved Mickey (pictured) at 7 years old — are now happily retired from laying duties 💚

We try to do everything as naturally as possible, using herbal remedies rather than chemicals wherever we can… because you are what you eat 🌿

We’re always happy to answer any questions about our hens, eggs, or how we care for them 😊

Just a wee reminder for anyone thinking of coming to the open day on Saturday to discuss our plan this needs to be booked below 💚💚🍂🍃

A 1 to 1 chat with us on our vision/plan for the croft including a wee wander round

Considering joining the community/ group growing at Doigh Nadair🌱🐝🐓

Here’s why it will be worth it:
• Greater food security & reliable access to essentials should the supermarket shelves become empty
• Fresh, high-quality food you helped grow
• Know exactly how your meat is raised, fed & treated
• Potential access to off-grid power & more independence
• Lower grocery costs over time
• Learn real-life skills (gardening, animal care, food preservation)
• Stronger sense of community & shared purpose
• Better for the environment 🌍
• Boosts mental & physical wellbeing

It won’t always be easy—but it’s a more resilient and connected way to live. 💚💚🌿🌿🌱🌱🍂🍂🍃🍃

🌿 Another idea we’re exploring… 🌿

Alongside this, we’re also looking into welcoming local schools and groups to Doigh Nadair for visits.

These would be a chance to meet the animals — including goats, sheep, ponies and pigs — and learn more about how they’re cared for in a hands-on, relaxed setting. 🐐🐑🐖

We’d love to hear from any teachers, group leaders or organisers who might be interested.

Please get in touch if you’d like more information!

We’ve been thinking about an idea and wanted to put it out there to see if there’s any interest before we take it further.

Would anyone be interested in helping care for animals at Doigh Nadair? This could include goats, sheep, ponies, pigs and more 🐐🐑🐖

It would be a regular arrangement with no cost involved. Anyone under 18 would need to be accompanied by an adult.

If this sounds like something you’d enjoy, let us know!
