❄️ Looking After Dogs in Cold Weather ❄️
(Peover Paws edition)
With the recent snow and temperatures dropping as low as -7°C, we wanted to share a few important reminders about keeping dogs safe, comfortable and happy during cold snaps. Although things are thawing right now, it’s still January — and winter isn’t finished with us just yet ❄️
Here’s how we look after your precious paws when the temperature drops:
🐾 Paws first
Ice, grit and road salt can be harsh on paw pads. We always check paws during and after walks, avoid heavily salted areas where possible, and clean paws when needed to prevent soreness or cracking.
🧥 Warmth matters
Some dogs cope brilliantly with the cold, others really don’t. Smaller breeds, seniors and short-coated dogs can feel it quickly, so walk lengths and routes are adjusted to suit your dog — not the weather forecast.
💧 Hydration still counts
Cold weather can reduce thirst, but hydration is just as important in winter. We keep an eye on this and always encourage a good drink after walks.
❄️ Safety over distance
In icy conditions, it’s not about how far we go — it’s about staying safe. Slippery paths, frozen ground and hidden ice mean we prioritise controlled, sensible walks over long ones.
❤️ Individual care, always
Every dog is different. We continuously assess energy levels, comfort and confidence on walks and adapt in real time — because no two dogs (or winters) are the same.
As always, if you ever have concerns about your dog in colder weather — coats, paw care, or walk suitability — please just ask.
We’re always happy to chat 🐶❄️
Passionate about your precious paws.
