Taking names now for Adolescent Class.
So, you think you have it nailed. You’ve been to puppy class, put in all the work, got the certificate and think you can now sit back and relax……………
If only. Suddenly, this well-behaved puppy has developed into a teenager, and you are pulling your hair out thinking ‘what have I done wrong’.
Adolescence begins around 5-6 months of age and continues until 2 years or more. In this time there are a lot of changes going on both physically and emotionally. Hormone and brain changes influence behaviours that can lead to your dog feeling conflicted and frustrated. Your dog has reached an age that make him or her want to be independent and explore. They are likely to be very impulsive and pay less attention to you when out on walks. At this time, they can also experience anxiety and stress and be fearful of things they weren’t frightened of before. Did you know that the adolescent brain has increased sensitivity to stress?
It is so important to be patient and understanding with your adolescent dog but also to guide him or her through training.
This class is specifically designed to help owners and their dogs through the adolescent period. We will be working on focus, enrichment, freework, rewarding calm behaviours and of course exercises that are so crucial such as recall and emergency stop.
