With warmer days on the way, it’s not just us who feel the heat — our pets do too ☀️🐾

A gentle reminder to keep an eye out for signs of heatstroke, especially during those unexpectedly hot spells. Dogs, cats, and other animals can struggle to regulate their body temperature, and it can become dangerous very quickly.

A few simple ways to keep them safe:

☀️ Always provide fresh, cool water
☀️ Make sure they have access to shade or a cool space indoors
☀️ Avoid walking dogs during the hottest parts of the day
☀️ Never leave pets in cars, even for a few minutes
☀️ Watch for warning signs like excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or vomiting

Heatstroke is an emergency 🚨 If in doubt, it’s always better to act quickly and contact us.

Let’s make sure our furry friends stay happy and safe in the sunshine 🐶🐱💛

❌ The Myth

Taking your arthritic dog for walks up hills is highly recommended, as the incline is the best way to rebuild lost muscle mass in weak hind legs.

✅ The Fact

While an uphill climb certainly engages the hindquarters, what goes up must come down - and the descent is where the hidden danger lies.

Walking downhill forces an arthritic dog to constantly 'brake', shifting a massive amount of their body weight forward. Dogs already carry approximately 60% of their weight on their front legs, and gravity multiplies this force on a decline. This puts immense, concussive strain on their elbows, shoulders, and carpal (wrist) joints. For dog guardians managing a dog with front-limb arthritis, a downhill walk can easily cause a severe and immediate flare-up.

Instead of relying on risky terrain to rebuild lost muscle, the safest and most effective approach is to work with a qualified veterinary physiotherapist. They can design a targeted, controlled, and low-impact exercise programme specifically tailored to your dog's biomechanics, helping them build strength safely without putting compromised joints at risk.

With the increase in puppy owners out and about which is lovely to see, but please bear in mind that you have a duty to protect puppies and mature dogs from fear and harm.

That means:-
1) Not allowing your puppy to run over to other dogs on leash.
2) Not allowing puppies to jump all over other dogs.
3) Not constantly putting them in situations they find anxious, like heavy traffic, to much foot fall places.
4) Dragging them on a lead/harness. Etc
And this is just a few.

We also gave a duty to protect other animals as well as humans, those who have fragile skin and can easily bleed and get infection from such scratches from jumping up.

It might sound a little trivial but what you see is a puppy learning behaviours that are not appropriate for adult life.
Yes they are lovely, they are puppies exploring but they are very vulnerable and therefore will get themselves into trouble or hurt, what we need to do in teach the foundation skills so they can learn better and walk away when needed, this then allows them to interact more and not get scolded, placing unnecessary fear emotions at such an early age.

Don't blame the other dog or person for the lack of responsibility you have failed to understanding.

If you require help or guidance on such situations, would like help and training to support puppy foundations behaviours then pop us a message or call and will can discuss further.

💚 Mental Health Awareness Week (11th – 17th May)

Mental Health Awareness Week is a powerful reminder that our mental well being is just as important as our physical health. In a world that often prioritises productivity over people, this week invites us to pause, reflect and reconnect – with ourselves and with each other

It is an opportunity to reflect on the well being within the veterinary profession – a field driven by compassion, dedication and resilience. While caring for animals is deeply rewarding, it also comes with unique emotional challenges that can sometimes be overlooked

Veterinary teams regularly face high-pressure situations, emotional conversations with clients, and the responsibility of making difficult decisions. Over time, this can take a toll. That’s why it is so important to create an environment where mental health is openly discussed, supported and prioritised

Across our branches, we are proud to have trained Mental Health First Aiders in place. These individuals are here to listen, offer support, and guide colleagues toward further help if needed. They play a vital role in fostering a culture where no one feels they have to struggle alone

But support doesn’t stop there. Mental health awareness is everyone’s responsibility. Whether is it checking in with a colleague after a tough day, taking time to rest and recharge, or simply being kind to yourself – small actions can make a big difference

This week is a reminder that looking after our own well being enables us to continue providing the best care for the animals and clients who rely on us 💚
