One of our lovely patients sustained a nasty gash that needed 19 stitches, after catching her elbow on a paddock fence. She was a star patient ✨ and her owners were brilliant at calling us as soon as it happened, giving the wound the best chance to heal.

In December 2023 we posted on Facebook asking for unwanted Cottage Craft type girths for a vet in Gambia who makes them into harness for working ponies and donkeys. It’s very hard for them to get tack out there so they use anything that comes to hand, often to the detriment of the equine.

The result of that post was donations of lots of girths, and the brilliant Client who initiated the idea has sent us this wonderful update:

"I have just got back from my latest trip there and took 20kg of horse related things ( just room for my bikini!! 🤣), 10kg of which was suitable girths. I had cut the buckles off to save weight in my luggage.

Picture of the vet collecting the bag of girths on his motorbike. He is very grateful and it will help many ponies and donkeys".

**FEI vaccination recording update**

Horses that are competing under FEI guidelines must comply with the new FEI vaccination rules. These came into place as of 3rd February 2025 and are as follows;

- the vaccination must be recorded by the vet in the horse's passport and on the FEI app
- photographic evidence of this is needed therefore have your passport handy!
- the vet may need to take photographs of your horse for identification

This change only applies to influenza vaccinations, all others are recorded as before in the horse's passport.

Historic vaccinations:
- can be submitted by the horse owner by updating the vaccination history on the FEI HorseApp

To enable this to be a smooth process at your horse's next vaccination, please make sure you have;
- got your horse's passport to hand
- your horse is clean and rug is removed in case photo ID is needed
- record your horse's last influenza vaccination in the HorseApp BEFORE the next vaccination is due

These make accurate dosing so much easier, less messy and safer too. Plus each cutter has a little storage section to keep the cut tablets safe, clean and dry.

*What, still January?!*

With January dragging and the colder months still ahead of us, be aware of impaction colics. These are more common in winter.

*Impaction colics*

*Risk factors* include:
- reduced turnout or exercise
- reduced water intake

*Clinical signs* include:
- reduced number or size of droppings
- dry droppings
- reduced appetite

Alongside other colic symptoms like: rolling, more time laying down, restlessness, flank watching and pawing.

*Prevention* :
- increase water intake via sloppy feeds and wetting hay
- ensuring fresh, clean water is available at all times
- increase movement through turning out as much as possible or exercising (when safe to do so)

*Monitor* :
- number and consistency of droppings

If you think your horse has colic, ring us immediately on 01485 528437

I was pulled from my field, from my work, from my play,
Ne’er again to see England, in lands far away,
Through death and destruction, through blood sweat and tears,
I carried my master, along with my peers,
So I ask you to remember a while,
Along with the soldiers, in smart rank and file,
Remember our beauty, the strength of our kind,
As we galloped through danger, without care to mind,
For we were the horses thrust into war,
And we gave up our lives for your peace evermore.

Please read the below message from one of our client's and look through your tackroom and see if you can help. All donations can be dropped off at Anchorage Barn or we can collect if we are due to visit you.....

"You may know that I have visited Gambia annually for several years. I try and help the neglected ponies and donkeys there where I can. I have become friendly with a vet over there and he does so much to help the local equines. Donkeys are used a great deal in Gambia and often the harnesses are badly fitting or just at end of life and cause bad sores. This vet takes old cottage craft type girths and makes simple replacement harness for the donkeys, which greatly improves their welfare. If you have any unwanted cottage craft type girths you are willing to donate, please let me know and I will send them all to this vet. He does a great job and it will be lovely to help him with his constant mission to help the donkeys".

We love to hear about the achievements our clients make. Here is a lovely message we received from Nicola and Ray:

As promised a couple of photos of Ray at the Search for a Star final at this year's Your Horse Live on the 10th November.

We won the Ridden M&M Championship class, Ridden Supreme Champion and then Reserve Supreme Champion.

I cannot thank you all enough for saving him when he was 18 months old.
