Ticks ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿ’กWhat are common signs of a tick on a pet?

Ticks are parasites that feed on blood and can
plague our dogs ๐Ÿ• and cats ๐Ÿˆ. Though their
presence may not be noticeable, ticks can
transmit many diseases through their bite.

Tick checks and awareness is so important.
Ticks can be found living in wooded area, leaf litter and grasses where they can attach themselves to dogs ๐Ÿ•, humans ๐Ÿงโ€โ™€๏ธ and outdoor animals ๐Ÿ‘. Ticks tend to be
more prominent as it gets warmer.

Ticks are often the size of a pinhead ๐Ÿ”Ž before they bite and prefer to attach close to the head, neck, ears and feet but can be found anywhere on your pet's body. They can also transfer from pets coming into the household from outdoors.

It's best to check your pet carefully on a regular basis.

Common signs of a tick include:
๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธBlood Loss
๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธAnemia
๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธTick paralysis
๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธSkin irritation or infection
๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธLyme disease
๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธCytauxzoonosis

If you do find a tick on your pet, it is vital to
take proper care when removing it as any
contact with the tick's blood can potentially
transmit infection to your pet or even to you.

We recommend using regular anti parasite treatments to effectively control ticks. There are a number of different treatments available from oral tablets, spot-on's and a 12 montly injectable.

Rabbits can make great pets but they should be re-homed with a companion bunny ๐Ÿ‡

They should be given plenty of fibre (hay) and a small amount of extruded pellets to keep the sharp tooth edges worn down, whilst preventing selective feeding

Regular health checks and vaccinations against Myxomatosis and VIral Haemorrhagic Disease can help keep your bunny in tip top condition ๐Ÿ’‰

Tapeworm in Dogs and Cats ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿˆ

Many people often overlook tapeworm when
choosing their parasite treatment/prevention
products for their pets, but tapeworm is just as
important as other parasites such as fleas,
ticks or lungworm. Find out why below

๐Ÿ’กDid you know?
๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธSome types of tapeworm are zoonotic
(humans can become infected). ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•๏ธ

๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธThe tapeworm 'Echinococcus Granulosus' can affect humans and form cysts within body
tissue (liver, brain, heart) causing severe
damage. Certain areas of the UK are higher risk
(Wales). 10-20 human cases in the UK/year

๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธThe tapeworms lifecycles can involve dogs ๐Ÿ•, cats ๐Ÿˆ, sheep ๐Ÿ‘ and other livestock ๐Ÿ„. Some tapeworms can cause severe issues in sheep and liverstock. ๐Ÿท๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿถ

๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธ Dipylidium caninum' is a 'smaller' tapeworm
(~50cm long!), it can also affect humans. It's
lifecycle involves fleas as a host and therefore
is very important to treat for fleas AND
tapeworms.

๐Ÿ”ธ๏ธ Echinococcus Multilocularis is not currently in the UK but is fatal in dogs ๐Ÿ•, foxes ๐ŸฆŠ rodents ๐Ÿ€, humans ๐Ÿงโ€โ™€๏ธ and the other species it approaches.

This is why tapeworm control is required
before any dog may enter the UK from another
country. ๐ŸŒŽ

๐Ÿ’กReduce risk:
โŒ๏ธ Don't allow your pets to eat raw offal/
carcasses (easier said than done, certainly with
cats that hunt).
โœ…๏ธ Always pick-up your dog's faeces on ๐Ÿ’ฉ

๐Ÿ’กPrevent/treat
There are only a few treatments available that
have proven effective against tapeworm, these
will contain one of the following:
-praziquantel
-fenbendazole

If your pet is due parasite treatment or you
wish to discuss your current protocol please
call ๐Ÿ“ž our friendly reception team on 01562 822986 who will be happy to help ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿชฐ Flystrike/Myiasis ๐Ÿชฐ

Flystrike (also known as Myiasis) is where flies lay their eggs on our pets which can be fatal. It is most commonly seen in rabbits ๐Ÿ‡ although can also happen to guinea pigs, cats ๐Ÿˆ and dogs ๐Ÿ•

๐Ÿ’ก From May-Septemer, it is important to be checking our pets for flystrike as it is deadly if not caught early.

Rabbits and other small furries should be checked at least once a day and cleaned if any urine/faeces is present around their back end. Their housing should be cleaned frequently to avoid any increase in flies

Pets that are more at risk are pets that are older, arthritic or overweight. This is because they are less likely to be able to keep themselves clean

If you think your pet is at risk of flystrike ๐Ÿชฐ. please get in contact to have a chat with one of our nurses for advice
