🏖️🐶 Beach Day with Your Dog? Do you know the hidden risks?🐾🌊
🌞 Heatstroke: Dogs can overheat quickly, especially brachycephalic breeds. Provide shade, fresh water, and never leave them in a hot car.
💦 Saltwater ingestion: Too much saltwater can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, or even salt poisoning.
🐚 Sharp shells & hot sand: These can burn or cut your dog’s paw pads. Stick to cooler times of day and check your dogs paws.
☀️ Sunburn: Yes, dogs can burn too… especially those with light skin or thin coats. Pet-safe sunscreen on noses and ears helps protect them.
🎾 Sand ingestion: Dogs chasing balls on the beach often swallow sand, which can lead to sand impaction, a dangerous blockage in the gut which may require emergency surgery.
🪼 Remember to be cautious of jellyfish in the water or stranded on the sand!
🚶‍♂️‍➡️Coastal paths - it’s recommended that you keep your dog on the lead. Be cautious of those sudden drops and loose rocks!
🐍 snakes love sunbathing and can be found having a quiet nap in a sand dune on hot days. Adder bites can be especially dangerous.
📞 If your dog shows signs of heatstroke, vomiting, or unusual behavior after the beach, call your vet right away 🏥

Meet Arlo.🐶
Arlo didnt read the memo on grass seeds🤣, and literally came in the very next consult after Missy, the dog we posted about with a grass seed in her eye!.

Arlo had been out for a walk that morning and had come back with sudden ear irritation. At this time of year, that's usually a very big clue that he may have acquired a foreign body down his ear.

Sure enough, when looking down the ear scope we could see 👀 a grass seed lodged in the horizontal ear canal. With a few appropriate tools and a bit of skill, we managed to extract this whopper 🥳🥳

Luckily for Arlo, he was presented very quickly which made treatment much easier. If left, the ear tends to swell around the seed and the seed continues to migrate towards the ear drum with each head shake.....grass seeds rarely migrate back out spontaneously due to the sharp barbs on the seed.

Meet Missy⭐️❤️
Poor Missy came in today with an acute onset of left eye pain 👁 On examination we found an ulcer lower left cornea and hidden deeper under the lower eyelid....a rather large grass seed which had got trapped! 😱
Missy was so well behaved, we managed to remove the grass seed with the help of some topical local anaesthetic. Look at the size of it!

❗️Grass seeds can be a real nuisance in the summer and autumn. We will see them stuck in ears, eyes and between toes fairly regulalrly at this time of year 🌾🌱

🌼🌸Summer Flowers & Pet Safety 🌸🌼
As gardens bloom it’s important to remember that some popular summer plants and flowers can be toxic to our pets😢🐶🐱
Some common toxic plants to watch out for:🚫 Lilies
🚫 Foxglove
🚫 Delphiniums
🚫 Hydrangea
🚫 Daffodils
🚫 Sweet peas
🚫 Azaleas & Rhododendrons
Even small amounts can have serious consequences – from gastrointestinal upset to more severe symptoms like seizures or kidney failure, depending on the plant and amount ingested.
Top tips to stay safe this summer:
✅ Know what's in your garden
✅ Supervise curious pets outdoors
✅ Keep bouquets of flowers out of reach‼️ Contact us immediately if you think your pet has eaten something they shouldn't👀
We’re here for you and your pet 24/7 🌞🌷

🌡️☀️ ANOTHER HEAT WAVE ALERT 🐾🔥
Hot weather can be deadly for pets. Never leave them in cars, avoid midday walks, and always provide water and shade.
🚨 Signs of heat stroke:Excessive pantingWeakness or collapseVomiting or drooling
Lethargy
⁉️IF YOUR PET HAS HEATSTROKE: Time is of the essence. Soak or immerse your dog in cold water then put a fan on them. DO NOT cover them in wet towels (they act as insulation). Then get your pet STRAIGHT to the vets!
We're here if you need us 24/7 - stay safe and cool! ❄️🩵

🐰✨ MEET QUEENIE ✨🐰
This bright and confident little bunny hopped in recently for a nurse consultation with one of our lovely RVNs Tammy. Queenie also had a pedicure while she was here 💅
Queenie has quite the story 📖
She was one of hundreds of rabbits rescued from Chaddesley Corbett Worcestershire😢 Thankfully, her tale has a happy ending - she’s now thriving in a loving forever home where her cheeky charm and big personality shines bright every day💛
With Rabbit Awareness Week in full swing, it's a great time to shine a light on the importance of rabbit welfare.✨
If you have questions about caring for your rabbit, or would like to book a nurse consult like Queenie, get in touch on 01562 822986. We’re here to help!🐇💛

⭐️ MEET ONE OF OUR WONDERFUL VETS - Ali Shepherd BVSc MRCVS cert AVP 🩺

🐾 “I have been a vet across several decades now! And have worked at Shepherds' vets most of that time 🏥

📃 I obtained a certificate in advanced vet practice in 2022, focussed in small animal medicine...and enjoy all aspects of medicine and diagnostic imaging that life presents to me. I also have an interest in emergency medicine, rabbits (RWAF rabbit advocate) and have elite fear free practitioner status, which recognises substantial time devoted to study of fear free approaches/animal handling 🐶

🐱🐰I am the lucky companion to a very joy-filled fox red labrador, Copper, and some free- roaming, squeaky guinea pig sisters.
Outside of work, I’m kept busy with my 3 boys, and exploring the beautiful spots of the UK with my dog 🌿🏔️ “
