Pests to be on the look out for in August

🐝 wasps are very active during the summer months, often building nests in lofts and sheds they are common pests.

🐜 ants are often seen in kitchen areas, utilities and patios.

🐀 mice and rats are still prevalent even in the summer months, living in close proximity to us for harbourage and food availability.

If you have an issue with these or any other pest give us a call 01926 298161 to find out more about the best way to deal with them.

There is plenty of insects around at the moment which is great food for the wasps, they are busy building nests often seen foraging wood from fences, sheds and soffit boards.
Nests are growing in size and wasps are getting more active as we get some warmer weather.
Whenever we carry out a wasp nest treatment we always wear a full sting proof suit to ensure safety.

Rodents are still busy, rats mice and squirrels are all active and can be making a nuisance of themselves if they get inside your homes and gardens.

Rodents are most active during the night, whilst this means they can usually avoid human contact but still take the benefit of living in our homes this can often mean that if you have a rodent infestation you might very well be in for some sleepless nights!
Moving around during the night in search of food, water etc the noise can seem like there must be something much bigger than a rat or mouse in the loft.
When we come out to you we always carry out a pest inspection survey to identify the species of pest before we carry out treatment that way we can be sure of using the correct method to get rid of the infestation quickly and effectively so you can regain a restful nights sleep.

The wasps seem quite aggressive this year. If you have seen a wasp nest or increased activity around your home and suspect there might be a nest be cautious and if in any doubt get a professional to treat it as wasp stings can be nasty.
Wasp nests are built throughout the summer, in late August/September where a single nest can contain approximately 5,000 wasps!!
If a wasp feels threatened it may sting but they also release a pheromone that signals danger to other wasps meaning they will likely attack the perceived threat and sting you.

Pests to be on the look out for in the coming month.
August is typically when we see a lot of activity from wasps, they are busy building the nest and by the end of the summer they can contain between 3-8,000 wasps.
We still see rodent infestations, if you are doing any work in or around your home be on the look out for rodent activity. Holes opening up around pipework or the base of the shed, droppings under kitchen cabinets or in the loft.
Insect activity is on the rise thanks to the warm damp weather at the moment.

For all your pest control queries we’re here to help.

Estimates put the number of rats in the uk between 10 and 120 million!

Rats are incredibly adaptable, harsh winters and lack of food sources would once have controlled populations but choosing to live off man’s table means these pests have been able to thrive. Seeking harbourage in our central heated homes, garages and sheds over the winter and eating food from rubbish bins, bird feeders and inside our kitchens means they can succeed all year round.

Rats have long been synonymous with disease, often blamed for the Black Death. They do carry and spread disease, including salmonella, Weil’s disease and listeria. When rats infest your home they don’t differentiate between floor, sewer and kitchen work surface, so bacteria and disease is easily spread from place to place (Yuk!)

Although relatively small, a wasp nest at this time of year can still be dangerous and should be treated with caution. When we are carrying out treatment we always wear full ppe.

We are getting a lot of wasp nests starting at the moment, as the weather warms up and there is a plentiful supply of food for them.
You usually find them in the loft, cavity wall, shed or sometimes in the ground but wasps really can build a nest almost anywhere!
Always take caution around a wasp nest and if any doubt have a professional carry out treatment. 🐝

Why do we treat wasp nests?
Wasps can be aggressive, their stings can be painful and sometimes life threatening. A wasp nest can contain several thousand wasps (that’s a lot of stings!)

Should all wasp nests be treated?
No. Wasps are valuable pollinators and also provide a pest control service for your garden feeding on aphids and small insects. However if they are a threat to public health or are in a place that poses a risk to people or animals it can be necessary to control them.

Over the next few months it’s all about wasps, they are the pest we get the most phone calls about during the summer. That’s because when queens wasps emerge from hibernation in the spring they start building a new nest this can be pretty much anywhere including right next to another nest.
Although relatively small at the beginning a wasp nest in the height of the summer can contain several thousand wasps!
