BHS Ride Out UK

BHS Ride Out UK We’re British Horse Society. The British Horse Society is the UK’s largest and most influential equestrian charity working to improve equestrian access.

The UK’s largest equestrian charity.

We champion horse and rider safety, access, education and care, helping every horse and person enjoy that amazing feeling.

We achieve this through an access team at our HQ in Stoneleigh, and a network of more than 200 experienced, voluntary bridleway officers, and a growing 150 Equestrian Access Groups throughout England, Scotland, Wales

and Northern Ireland. The British Horse Society's Equestrian Access Groups are an important part of our society and not only uphold our values and promote equestrian access at a grass-roots level - they can be a fun, sociable meeting place for riders, carriage drivers and horse lovers, and make a difference for future generations in their area. We encourage the groups to forge links with us, so we can work together for the common good of all horses, riders and drivers. We have nearly 150 Equestrian Access Groups affiliated to us, and would encourage anyone who has an interest in horses and would like to do more to champion equestrian access in your area, to consider joining us. Contact [email protected] or look on our website to find your nearest group. The British Horse Society cannot achieve the great successes we do without members. If you would like to join us, support our work, and reap the benefits of BHS membership, please visit our website www.bhs.org.uk.

🌟 This week is Volunteers' Week dedicated to celebrating the brilliant people supporting our work 🌟

A HUGE thank you to goes to our incredible Volunteers, Historical Researchers and Equestrian Access Groups! We want to take a moment to recognise the fantastic work carried out by our dedicated team, our passionate volunteers and EAGs, and the brilliant Historical Researchers who give so much of their time and expertise. 🙏🏼👏🏼👨🏻‍👩🏼‍👧🏻‍👦🏼

Your commitment to improving equestrian access and recording our precious historical rights of way makes a real and lasting difference. Every hour spent researching, checking routes, and sharing knowledge safeguards access for future generations of equestrians. 🐴🗺️🌳

Following a recent Project 2026 training course, we received this lovely feedback from an attendee: 🗨️ “Thank you for the super work the BHS is doing.”

Feedback like this reflects the impact of your efforts, and we couldn’t be prouder or more grateful for everything you do. 💛

Thank you for helping protect the past and empower the future of equestrian access. 🐎✨

✨ Buck Lane update: Bridleway upgrade complete!

You may remember our post back in March celebrating the opening of the new signalised road crossing at Buck Lane in Baildon, Bradford, Yorkshire. 🚦

We’re pleased to share that the bridleway leading to the crossing from the River Aire bridge is now also open, with 3,000 metres resurfaced using flexi-pave. 🌿

This has been made possible thanks to the collaborative work of Yorkshire Access Field Officer, Mark Corrigan, Access & Bridleways Officer, Pam Allen, Bradford Council, Bradford Local Access Forum, local councillors, Walk Wheel Cycle Trust and West Yorkshire Combined Authority, who all played a part in helping secure approval for the project. 💚

Funded through Active Travel and delivered by Bradford Council, the project brings lasting benefits for walkers, cyclists and horse riders alike. 🚶🏻🚴🏻‍♂️🐎

Thank you to everyone involved in bringing this improvement to life, we hope many people will enjoy the new and improved surface. 🙌🏻

Congratulations to our volunteer Regional Access & Bridleways Officer for Yorkshire, Catriona Cook, on receiving the Centenary Long Service Award at the Reading University Volunteering Awards on Thursday 7 May. 🙌🏻

Catriona has dedicated years to championing the protection and proper recording of rights of way, encouraging local authorities to uphold their statutory duties. 🗺️

Her passion has inspired so many — from taking children out riding, to supporting volunteers with research and definitive map modification order applications, to raising an incredible £20,000 through multiple high-profile 450-mile Journeys for Access. 🐴

Through historical research, statement writing, public inquiry presentations and cross-examination, Catriona has helped restore around 140 miles of bridleway for the public to enjoy, now and for generations to come. 💚

Access Field Officer for Yorkshire, Mark Corrigan shared a comment from another volunteer following a recent Yorkshire meeting - “thank you so much for organising the meeting; having access to Catriona Cook who willingly shares her historical knowledge and expertise throughout was incredible”. Mark expressed his gratitude too - “Catriona is a hugely valued volunteer, providing support and mentoring across the BHS volunteer community.” 💪🏻

A huge thank you to Catriona for all her hard work, dedication and lasting contribution over the years. 👏🏻

“Why should I take part in this year’s Rideathon Challenge?” we hear you ask 🤔

Well, the money you help raise goes towards our Ride Out Fund.

The Ride Out Fund provides funding for projects that protect and restore safe off-road routes for equestrians as well as other users around the UK. From clearing overgrown paths, replacing gates for horse-friendly options, and ensuring surfaces are useable all year round, everything we do is to support horse lovers like you to have access to safe, off-road routes. 🪵

With more and more horse and rider road injuries being reported to BHS every year, it is vital that these routes are preserved for the safety of equestrians. 🦺

The more we raise, the more projects we can support. 🏇🏻

🙌🏻 Meet the team 🙌🏻

👱🏻‍♀️ Wendy Bannerman our Access Field Officer for the East and West Midlands.

Wendy has been with BHS for six brilliant years, working hand-in-hand with our incredible volunteers across the East and West Midlands to champion equestrian access. Whether she’s teaming up with local authorities, untangling tricky issues on shared routes, or diving into consultations, Wendy is right at the heart of keeping riders, carriage drivers and routes happily moving forward. 🐎✨

❓ What do you get up to outside of work?
🗨️ Most of my free time is enjoyed with my pony and two labradors. So, I'm outdoors more than I'm in! When I'm home I like to bake, nothing fancy, I just love a treat that's homemade. I practice yoga for strength and wellbeing and think it helps my riding. Love 'outdoorsy' holidays with my family, mainly in the UK so that the dogs can come too. 🐴🐕🍰🧘🏻‍♀️

❓ What’s a random fact about you?
🗨️ I lived in Medellin, Colombia for a year doing voluntary work. I learned Latin Dance, met wonderful people and savoured local cuisine. 💃🏻

❓ What do horses mean to you?
🐴 Authentic. Power. Grace
🗨️ When I walk to the field and my pony calls me, it's a really special moment that always makes me smile, no matter what else was on my mind before. The partnership we have isn't perfect and we both have our ups and downs, but we depend on each other in different ways and all that we do, we achieve together. Yes, I enjoy the exhilaration of a competition, but the simple things mean so much more: camping in my trailer with my pony corralled beside me on a weekend away; the sound of chomping on hay; watching her roll after a challenging ride. So rewarding. And I've made such lovely, like-minded friends through my pony, past and present; we meet up at pleasure rides, go on horsey holidays for adventures together and support each other when we need it. In my work I can advocate for others to enjoy their horses too as I appreciate how much it means.

❓ Favourite spot in the UK to visit?
🗨️ Stiperstones in Shropshire😊
