❗Bluetongue update ❗- edited as updated with more up to date information.
Following the identification of historic BTV-3 cases in cattle in Lancashire, the Restricted Zone (RZ) has now been extended to include Lancashire and the remaining part of North Yorkshire.
The risk of vector transmission of bluetongue is still considered low at the moment but when midges become more active there is more chance of spread of the disease.
Owners of cattle, sheep and camelids please remain on the lookout for symptoms – this disease is notifiable by law meaning you must report it if you suspect it to APHA.
What does this mean for livestock movements? 🗺️
We generally advise not moving animals out of a restricted zone into a free zone as these have been put in place to prevent disease spread.
However, if moving animals you will need a licence to move out of the restricted zone but you may not require a pre-movement test.
You’ll need to get a:
• general licence if moving animals to slaughter
• specific licence if moving animals to another premises e.g auction mart
Follow the link for information regarding licences and applications. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/bluetongue-movement-licences-and-designated-slaughterhouses
The animals you currently need to test before movement are:
• entire males intended for breeding
• females that are pregnant or have unknown pregnancy status
• youngstock aged 60 days or younger at the time of the movement – these animals need a single test before they can be moved, unless they are travelling at foot with the maternal dam - in this case, you can test the maternal dam by PCR and ELISA
• animals being moved for germinal product collection (ova, semen or embryo)
You must time your sampling so that the samples are valid on the planned move date. Samples taken:
• until 11:59pm on 26 May 2025 are valid for 21 days
• on or after 27 May 2025 are valid for 10 days
You cannot get free testing for exempt animals. If you want to sample and test other animals you’ll need to pay privately.
