Although this weather is a warm welcome to us all as temperatures rise, cattle can begin to struggle long before it feels โtoo hotโ to us. Even a few days of warm, humid weather can affect milk production, fertility, feed intakes, and overall herd health.
Dairy cows are particularly vulnerable during humid conditions, especially in sheds or collecting yards where airflow may be limited. Early action can make a real difference.
Key Areas to Focus On:
โ๏ธ Water Supply: Cows will drink significantly more in hot weather. Make sure troughs are clean, flowing well, and easy to access.
โ๏ธ Airflow & Ventilation: Improve air movement wherever possible โ open up sheds, check fans are running efficiently, and avoid stale, humid conditions.
โ๏ธFeeding Management: Offer larger portions of feed during cooler periods of the day or overnight, when cows are more likely to eat comfortably.
โ๏ธ Reduce Heat Build-Up: Minimise time spent standing in collecting yards and avoid unnecessary handling during the hottest hours.
โ๏ธGrazing Considerations: Where possible, provide access to shade or allow cows indoors during peak daytime temperatures.
Heat stress doesnโt just affect performance today; it can have knock-on effects on fertility and health for weeks afterwards.
