Fishkeeper Fry is back for 2026 and registration is now open!

This short 8-week programme has been designed to be delivered in the classroom by the schools' own teachers. It uses a series of weekly online instructional films, engaging worksheets, and added-value films, which provide step-by-step lessons about setting up an aquarium, adding fish and looking after those fish day-to-day.

The resources have all been developed to support the National Curriculum and to get children excited about keeping fish and understanding how to look after and care for them responsibly. Participating schools will be provided with their very own free aquarium and all the associated equipment that is used in the programme to enable them to follow along with the films and set up and care for their own aquarium in the classroom – all with the support of the expert fishkeepers based at a Maidenhead Aquatics store near to your school.

This time of year, fancy goldfish will enjoy a summer break in a well-filtered outdoor pool that offers protection from predators. With natural sunlight, live insects to eat and a decent water volume, they’ll grow and develop rapidly. The flip side to this is that they’ll then need a large aquarium when they come back indoors in autumn, but fish such as these Calico ryukin just get better with age. This batch of youngsters were seen at Reefkeeper Moss End, a store that specializes in marines but offers a lot more besides.

There’s a reason why Orfe (Leuciscus idus) have been popular pond fish for years, they’re hardy, fast-growing, cold tolerant and excellent value. They do need large, oxygen-rich ponds but unlike Koi they don’t damage plants or stir up silt from the bottom of the pond. The gold form has been around forever, but the blue strain is a much newer addition and needs clear water to look its best, owing to its darker colouration. Orfe do have one major weakness, they’re susceptible to some of the stronger fish medications on the market – so make sure you read the instructions or take advice before adding any chemicals and always use a tap water conditioner that detoxifies heavy metals. These were seen at our Thornbury store, but you’ll find them in every one of our pond sections.

The humble goldfish seems like one of the most harmless and innocuous pets that it’s possible to get. Peacefully feeding and swimming around and emitting the occasional bubble, it’s hard to imagine that your aquatic friend could pose a threat to anyone, let alone an entire ecosystem. Yet conservationists in Australia have found that because of their huge popularity in domestic aquaria, unwanted goldfish are fast becoming a big problem in the wild.
