Another morning, another park and a parking ticket πŸ™ˆ
Flo is not so keen on traffic, and pigeons (random, but true 🀣). There are a lot of wood pigeons in the trees near my house. Knocking twigs down to make nests and they make a right bloody racket πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ
So we went to flixton park, as its on a pretty busy road, but we can create lots of space and stand well back from the traffic, mooch and play games πŸ‘Œ
And Β£50! Just what i need when we're working at a reduced capacity πŸ™ˆπŸ€·β€β™€οΈ (i thought it was free now in the main bit, but it was 50p. Now Β£50. What a wally I am! Gutted 😭)
And Flo met a toddler covered in raspberry yoghurt, which she thoroughly enjoyed 🀣

Unintentional back chaining! πŸ™ˆ What is it?
Back chaining is a dog training practice where the last part of a behavioural sequence is taught first and then earlier steps added! Unintentional is the same process, only you didn't mean to, and it's a bloody scourge πŸ‘ŒπŸ€£
I see this, with people with pups *and adult dogs, all the time. which is why management and prevention of 'undesirable' behaviour is so key! πŸ‘Œ
Examples would be, when repeated frequently:
Visitor arrives - puppy jumps up - puppy asked to sit - pup sits - reward given! (jumping is now part of the sequence πŸ™ˆ)
Puppy bites your clothes - you pull out their favourite toy for a good old game of tug - (biting your favourite hoodie is now part of the sequence πŸ™ˆ)
Puppy barks out of window / bites your gorgeous venetian plastering (nope not Flo, never, ever πŸ™„πŸ€£) - puppy is called away - puppy is given cheese (biting your lovely venetian plastering is now part of the sequence πŸ™ˆ)
Puppy pulls at end of lead - puppy is called back into position - eats cheese - puppy naffs off back to end of the lead (pulling is now part of the sequence πŸ™ˆ)
So, beware of unintentional back chaining πŸ‘Œ
It's pretty difficult to completely avoid - the question I always ask myself is "what is my puppy learning right now?"
Tomorrow I'll do a long and probably boring post about how to avoid back chaining in examples above!
Good luck, and hold onto your hats puppy people πŸ€£πŸ‘Œ
Feel free to share any behaviours you've back chained, either on purpose or by accident 🐾

Socialisation! Some advice I see, feels like a box ticking exercise (and dont even get me started on letting your pup meet every person and dog they see πŸ™ˆπŸ™„).
Flo is not keen on leaving the house. She's just a baby at 12 weeks old 🐾 We've tried before food, and after, different weather, different directions, different times of day, different mixes of ric, I and the boys πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ we've sat on the drive, and played games on the drive.
She loves being out, it's just the getting out. Sometimes we carry her a bit of the way. Today i drove her to a park.
She had a great time, watched traffic from a comfortable distance, met a lovely man, ran up and down the ramps, and explored lots of new stuff 🧐 She also saw someone on a mobility scooter, and a helicopter 😊
Socialisation is a marathon, not a sprint πŸ‘Œ

I'm going to be honest. Today has been a REAL challenge πŸ€·β€β™€οΈπŸ€£πŸ™ˆ. Flo has tested every single strand of my patience! And then some!
I'm very conscious that puppy raising is hard work and lots of lovely new puppy people follow this page. I don't want them to feel like it's all easy here, so they must be doing something wrong. So, here's your dose of reality, she's been a massive pain in the arse pretty much all day πŸ‘ŒπŸ€£ And now she is snoozing on me, and all is forgiven. Kind of πŸ‘Œ

Update - meeting Flo's needs, before my wants.
A story in pictures πŸ™„πŸ€·β€β™€οΈπŸ€£ I feel like I've put the batteries in and lost the remote πŸ‘Œ
(and yes, she has dragged the cat tree halfway across the kitchen πŸ™ˆ)

'You have to give your dog what they need, before you can have the dog you want' πŸ‘Œ
Powerful and so very true πŸ‘Œ
In reality what Flo, and all pups and dogs need most in my view is security and feelings of safety. Kindly set boundaries, structure and a whole heap of fun 🐾
They need food, water, shelter and to be have their health needs met. Oh, and sleep, loads of that πŸ€£πŸ˜΄πŸ‘Œ
One of the things I want, is to head out with Flo early in the morning. Flo is not up for early πŸ™ˆ. In fact, Flo is not a morning kinda girl. Flo wants to eat pretty much as soon as she gets up, which means we can't walk till much later than I'd like, due to trying to minimise her risk of bloat. I've tried various strategies this last week and quite simply, she is not in the best frame of mind until she's eaten.
So, I'm having to shift my expectations, and how i like to 'do' mornings, fairly significantly,
She has to have what she needs - food - before
I can have what I want πŸ‘Œ
