Something a bit different for Mid-Suffolk Equine Vets.

On the 13th March Elle and Jess turned up to the practice and found a hedgehog in a very poor state by the front door of the office. We rang around for places to take in the hedgehog for care and found Suffolk Prickles Hedgehog Rescue in Stonham.

The hedgehog had a chest infection, was dehydrated and had lungworm which is highly common in Hedgehogs due to slugs and worms they eat. He was also underweight at 544g and came back to us weighing 1036g!

Fast forward a couple of months and he has had treatment and microchipped for future records. If he is taken in again for treatment to a vet or a hedgehog rescue, they will know his history.

Thank you to Suffolk Prickles for their help in making the hedgehog feel better and providing a hedgehog house for his release.

This year we have seen a rise in breathing difficulties in a lot of our equine friends. It is important to get this treated, as anyone with asthma will tell you, struggling to breath is really unpleasant.

The majority of breathing difficulties can be treated with simple management and medical treatments, such as washing dusty hay, turning out 24/7, and medication like Ventipulmin.

However, severe breathing difficulties can require more help, and at Mid-Suffolk Equine Vets we are fortunately able to hire out nebulisers. These are specifically designed contraptions that allow horses to naturally breath in medication or even just v***r to ease the flow of air in and out of their lungs.

If you are worried about your horses breathing in any way, please do call us on 01449516000.

The last few days have been a scorcher and it is looking like it will be a hot summer. The summer months can cause horses to be dehydrated and lethargic. It is important to put in a little extra for our equine friends.

Signs of dehydration and heat-related illness’:

• Reduced Urination/ Dark urine
• Increased temperature >38.5’C
• Breathing rapidly and flaring their nostrils.
• Muscle spasms
• Slow recovery after exercise/reduced performance.

How to keep them cool and comfortable:

• Make sure they have lots of fresh, clean water. A good way to help replace their electrolytes which can be lost through sweating is to either use mash with electrolytes in, or add extra water to their feed. Another way to replace electrolytes which is a bit cheaper is to add ONE to TWO tablespoons of salt to their water once daily during the period of extreme heat. We also have electrolyte paste and granules that you can add to your horse’s feed regime
• Having access to shaded areas throughout the day. If they are stabled make sure the stables/barn have good ventilation.
• Please try to exercise your horse first thing in the morning or later on in the evening when the temperatures are lower. As well as the timing of your ride, try to reduce the intensity of their work.
• Hosing your horse off throughout the day is always a handy way to help cool your horse down.
• If your horse needs to be travelled make sure they have as much ventilation as possible and offer them water at any points where you stop the vehicle. Also avoid travelling at the hottest parts of the day

If you have any questions or would like any advice, please contact us via email or call us on 01449 516000.

In April Chris was called out to examine and treat an old nail sticking out of Jackson’s foot.

Luckily the owner had been very sensible and not removed the nail, allowing Chris to head out with the x-ray kit to check how deep the nail had gone in and which structures may be affected. After assessing the x-rays, and confirming that the nail had not hit anything important, Chris went in to try and remove it and with a bit of wiggling and pulling he was able to remove the whole nail. Chris then x-rayed the foot again to check there was no nail fragments left behind.

This patient was very lucky from his nail encounter because if it had gone any deeper or at a different angle it could have damaged important structures such as the pedal bone or navicular bursa and become very lame, potentially requiring referral to a hospital.

Jackson was given IV injections of pain relief and antibiotics, some oral meds to continue with and a poultice was placed over the hole to help both clean and cover it.

Jackson decided he hadn’t quite seen enough of Chris and unfortunately the next morning started showing signs of colic. Chris went out to examine and treat Jackson. Later on in the day Jackson was still not quite right and this time got to meet Charlotte. Following further assessment and treatment, Jackson’s condition improved and started to pass droppings!

After a few days of TLC, close monitoring and continued medication and poulticing, Jackson was continuing to show signs of improvement with no further colic episodes.

Jackson has now fully recovered from his concerning couple of days.

Thank you to Chris and Charlotte for their efforts and efficiency in his treatment.
