The Durham family have been farming at Scotsburn since 1957. Richard, Sally & Jen are the partners in the business, with Jen taking day to day responsibility. Farming at Scotsburn has continued for the next generation through a successful contract farming relationship for the management and care of our livestock, with the Scott Family and their team at Fearn Farm since 2016. In late 2015, we estab
lished a new pedigree Luing Cattle Herd, sourced from the legendary Cadzow Brothers Isle of Luing cattle genetics. Our herd is now at the stage where we are selling pedigree breeding stock, in addition to retaining breeding heifers each year. Much farm is hill ground, and it has been heartwarming to see how successful the Luing breed has been at utilising this upland landscape, and enhancing biodiversity at the same time. In addition to the 50 strong herd of Luings, we also run a flock of 400 commercial ewes, and 200 Shetland ewes, producing store lambs each year. We are an entirely grass based system, undertaking a Carbon Audit annually and are always looking for ways to become more efficient. Our aim is to optimise grass growth through rotational grazing techniques and embrace farming with the environment alongside producing high quality, high welfare scotch meat produced in the heart of the Highlands amongst stunning scenery. Scotsburn is also well known in equestrian circles from the running of the Scotsburn Horse Trials from 2003 to 2019. Richard and his capable committee of local highlanders organised the event, with the loyal and generous sponsorship of the Global Energy Group. The Horse Trials gave the Highland horse community a local venue where they could compete in a British Eventing Horse Trials on Highland turf and gave many people in our locality, many happy days. The Ross-shire Pony Club base themselves from Scotsburn and are able to make ongoing use of the equestrian facilities on the farm.
