Routine saddle checks are vital!
There was no concerns with this saddle or the way the horse was going but just wanted a check over while their other horses saddles needed maintenance work. Upon inspection of the saddle it was apparent the CAIR panels felt a bit flat, it turned out 3 out of the 4 needed replacing!

🐎 Saddle fit & back pain – a timely reminder as seasons change

As we move out of winter and towards spring, it’s a good time to think about something that often gets overlooked: saddle fit.
A saddle that fitted well a few months ago may no longer suit your horse - and subtle changes over winter can have a big impact on comfort and performance.

❄️ Winter weight changes
Many horses gain or lose weight over winter depending on workload, rugging, forage, and management. Changes in:
• topline
• shoulder shape
• rib coverage
can alter how a saddle sits and distributes pressure. A slightly tighter or looser fit can lead to muscle soreness and back pain.

🩺 Signs your horse’s saddle may need checking
Watch out for:
• resistance when being tacked up
• girthiness or ear-pinning
• hollowing, bucking, or reluctance to go forward
• uneven sweat patterns
• back sensitivity when grooming
These are often early signs of discomfort.

✅ What to do
• Have your saddle checked regularly, especially at seasonal changes
• Reassess fit after weight gain, weight loss, or changes in workload
• Monitor your horse’s back and behaviour closely

Comfortable horses move better, perform better, and stay sounder for longer. Seasonal changes in weight and coat mean that saddle fit should not be a “set and forget” decision.
If you’re concerned about your horse’s back, performance, or comfort, our team is always happy to advise. 0808 168 5580. A small check now can prevent a big problem later.

Winter saddle fits are a must, it gets harder to get the ridden hours in with daylight and the weather, our horses shape still changes and our saddles still need the regular maintenance.
Please pop us a message to book in even if you’re only riding once a week it’s important to keep up with routine checks!

Why are regular saddle fittings important?

Your horse’s comfort isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. A well fitting saddle supports healthy movement, balanced riding, and long term soundness. Even small changes in your horse’s muscle tone, weight, or workload can make a previously perfect saddle suddenly uncomfortable.

Regular saddle checks can help:
• Prevent soreness and behavioural issues
• Improve performance and freedom of movement
• Ensure even pressure distribution
• Keep both you and your horse safe and comfortable

How often should you have a saddle fitting?
This is dependant on many factors, routine fittings every 6 months at a minimum but more frequent fittings will be required if you have;
• Young horses still developing
• Horses coming back into work
• Horses in heavy training
• Horses gaining/losing weight or muscle
• Horses showing behavioural or performance changes

Your horse deserves the best fit, every time. 🐎❤️

Check your girth straps now!!
Recently we’ve seen seen split, stretched and snapped girth straps and been able to replace and re stitch some lovely new ones on, all on site on our travels, making sure the saddles can continue to be used safely!
