I had the pleasure of looking after these beautiful does earlier last year when Abigail (Roman Rats) was away on holiday. I absolutely fell in love with the little cinnamon vari, especially. I'm very lucky that these girls have come to me for a short period of time to help me start my variegated line with my two boys, Rowan and Flynn.

So, meet Dorothea (agouti variegated) and Amabel (cinnamon variegated) 💕

My initial plan was to outcross straight away with my silken line, but with me trying to keep my rat numbers at a manageable amount until Antonio and I move in together, it made sense to take Abigail up on her offer to use her does from her last litter, especially as she is sadly no longer breeding. They will be cared for here until any successful litters are no longer dependent on them, at which point they will go back home with Abigail (sadly for me 🤣).

This means that, all being well, I will have variegated babies soon, and hopefully with the next generation, I can outcross with my silken line and run that for a few generations separately to see what happens. I'm very excited as I adore my core lines temperament, and Abigail's variegated lines temperament is something I absolutely love too. So combining the two seems like an exciting venture in terms of temperament and the potential for splodgy silkens 👀

As with any outcross, things can go amazingly, or things can go not so well, so it's important to run an outcross separate to my core line to assess a few generations before I make the decision to merge the lines completely. So starting with pure Roman blood seems like a solid less stressful plan for now, especially when I have so much planned personally over the course of the next year.

I'm very excited about this upcoming project, and am looking forward to what the future brings with a Sceville marked rats journey. This also means I can help to keep an absolutely wonderful line going, as Roman rats really are amazing. And perhaps one day if Abigail ever starts breeding again, she will have a part of her line with me to come back to. 🧡

Adult bucks and doe cages all done the last couple days. Doe intros are complete and they've all moved into the SRS XL. We've still got two does from recent litters hanging out with us for a bit longer so they're in with my doe group too for now ❤️

Finally back to some sort of normalcy after the chaos of baby cages everywhere....for now 🤭

10 happy boys after intros ❤️

Cosmo, Graham, Salem, Eric, Kevin, Flynn, Rowan, Sirius, Jasper & Orion.

The girls turn next, they're currently in the alaska undergoing intros and all is going well, so their big cage will be all cleaned and set up to go back into tomorrow 🥰

Sceville Future Breeding Plans (2026)

In relation to my 2026 pairings, I am planning two separate breeding runs.

🐀 January 2026
I’m hoping to pair rats to begin my variegated line.
I will be using foundations from Roman Rattery - two of my Roman vari boys (Rowan and Flynn), and borrowing two Roman vari does. This will be the start of a new line for me so currently no further plans aside from pairing.

🐀 April–June 2026
During this period (exact dates undecided, as I don’t tend to set firm plans far in advance), I will be pairing for my silken line.

My main goals for these pairings (and beyond) are:
• To produce more black silken in top ear consistently
• Work further on making mink silken more common in my line
• Maintain the solid type I've worked towards and got in my previous litters

🐀 Timelines from pairing
If a pairing is successful:
• Gestation is approximately 3 weeks
• Babies will not leave until 8 weeks of age
• This creates a total timeframe of around 12 weeks from pairing to babies being ready for homes

Waiting for ethically bred rats often requires patience, so please keep this in mind when planning future mischiefs or looking to start one.

All of the baby bucks headed off to their new homes yesterday, so I started intros with my keepers.

I don’t really do intros the 'normal' way – I’ve done them enough times now that I just read the rats and adjust as needed.

My line is ace in terms of temperament, and that definitely helps with intros. My buck group also includes two Roman boys who are incredibly chill, which makes the whole process even smoother. I’ve had intros done and dusted within a few hours before with no issues at all.

Once all the babies had left, I removed the hammock from baby buck Alaska just to avoid any scrapping over sleeping space, and added my older boys. There was lots of sniffing…and that was it.

The babies are absolutely loving their older buddies – now living with their dads, cousins, uncles, probably other family relations I can't remember off the top of my head, and the two Roman boys. Everyone has been super happy and settled overnight.

I’ll move them back into the big cage tomorrow. I’d normally do it today, but with other things going on I don’t have the time – otherwise they’d already be living together properly. 🐀💙

And lastly, meet Orion. He's named after a constellation, and is a very gorgeous mink silken dumbo from Minx and Eric's litter 🧡

I hadn't really considered the possibility of breeding mink silken prior to my explosion of recessive babies last year, but I've absolutely fallen in love with the variety so I'm going to try and keep it in my line.

He's a very gently little lad, and slightly more reserved than his brother Jasper, but such a sweetheart and loves to play with his siblings 🧡

Well, I guess it was inevitable this little lady would be staying...meet Lyra. Her name comes from a constellation.

She's from Nebula X Kevins litter and is a black top ear. She's just one of those rats you know deep down will stay, but you don't want to commit too early because things could change.

She's such a people rat. A soppy, ridiculous little lady who loves attention. Just like every other Sceville I introduce, she is a true mischief maker!

Type wise, she has a really decent, solid body for a baby doe, so I'm excited to see how she continues to grow 🥰

The final keepers from my recent litters...

This is Jasper, a very handsome black silken dumbo 😍

My original heart rat many years ago was a black silken dumbo called Mr Gibbs. He is the reason I fell in love with the silken variety, and is why I chose to breed silken, with black silken being my primary goal.

I'm absolutely over the moon to have black silken back in these litters. Its been quite the challenge to maintain it after getting nothing but agouti and recessives last year, and being denied access to my borrow back breeding bucks who were black in silken and self meant it was slightly more challenging, but the rat gods blessed me this time with everything I need to form a more solid black silken line.

This boy is an absolute sweetheart. He's ever so snuggly, and equally cheeky and adventurous. He's one of the first boys to the front of the cage every time and if I blink...he's off somewhere exploring! He has a decent, solid body type and all round, I'm just obsessed with him.

Very excited to watch this little lad grow up 🧡

All Scevilles receive a kitten pack when they go to their new homes 🥰

Just putting these together before I head off for my afternoon nap before I start my set of night shifts this evening. I finish Saturday morning when kitten collections will begin so I'm trying to be prepared as I won't be feeling up to too much when I finish work 😴

For anyone waiting for replies from me regarding kitten collection - I'll get back to it this evening!

Kitten packs include treats, a handmade toy, and a homing handbook which includes my contact details, the kittens litter, date of birth, variety, all of my homing policies, recommended small businesses, and a discount off of pet toys and rat boarding with me.

Family trees are accessible in the owners group as I like to put the kittens names on their family trees, and majority of the time, people haven't decided on names before they collect.

Just wanted to show a little insight into how I give out information to new homes, and to hopefully portray how much I care about the rats I home out ❤️

Nothing warms my heart more than seeing Scevilles settle into their new homes, and this update is extra special!

A wonderful member of my waiting group recently had an unexpected loss, leaving her sweet boy Florian alone. Luckily, my older litters were ready for new homes, so he wasn’t lonely for long.

The babies are absolutely smitten with their grown-up friend, and Florian seems to be loving his new baby buddies too! They started intros the moment they arrived at their new home, and everything went smoothly. That's one of the many things I love about my line - intros always tend to be easy and I've done most of my intros in less than a day with my own line. They're just super chill and happy to be involved!

I'm so glad the timings worked out and my rats could provide companionship for an older boy who needed some new friends ❤️

I want to be very clear: I will not home rats to anyone who wants them as a Christmas gift or who cannot wait until after the holiday period. Rats are living beings that require commitment, research, and proper care - they are NOT impulsive presents. There is a very big reason ethical breeders do not home rats close to Christmas.

It’s incredibly frustrating when people pull out of homing arrangements after expressing interest for homing in January, especially after being told they'd be contacted with final homing arrangements in a couple weeks, because they've found rats available elsewhere to take home this side of Christmas. This has already happened four times with the current round of litters.

Unless you are genuinely committed to homing rats in January, please do not express interest and have me confirm I will contact you after the festive period to arrange final details.

I value my time and effort in breeding, homing, and communicating with potential homes. I do this alongside working night shifts, running three small businesses, and managing everyday life - it's not easy, and I do not appreciate being messed around. Genuine change of plans is different, and I am always more than understanding, but not with this.

If you are unable to wait a few weeks for a responsible, ethical homing process, my rats are not the right choice for you. I take homing seriously, and I will only place my rats in homes where their welfare is the priority. It also shows a lack of respect for the breeder and the time and efforts involved in the homing process.

Alarm bells should be ringing if anyone is homing rats this close to the festive period. Absolutely no ethical breeder will do this as far too many people want pets for Christmas, whether they say that's the case or not. We do not want our rats to become another discarded Christmas gift when the novelty wears off.
