Beautiful Paddy popped in earlier to our Ilminster branch and took a closer look at the new toys displayed, pure curiosity and tail wagging joy. He also gave the vet and team a very warm greeting, thank you Paddy 🐾

Please bear with us at this current time. We have a number of staff off unwell at the moment, so things may take longer than normal. We appreciate your patience.

Don’t forget to leave out water for our smaller friends. I’m sitting on the patio and lots of bees landing there. I turned on the (leaking) hose and they’ve all had a drink and flown off. Pollinating is thirsty work…

Meant with good intentions we are seeing a marked rise in poor outdated advice on heat stroke the last few days. Not just social and print media but the hallowed Today program. Dont mess about with “cool the feet”, “put a damp towel over” or “use tepid water”. Soak the dog ( if it doesnt go through the coat, use washing up liquid or soap to break through the oils); towels just trap warm air slowing cooling; you will not cause fatal shock by using cold water, in the same way drinking REASONABLE amounts of cold water can help, the colder the better, ice cubes included. Allowing overdrinking can cause problems but that usually occurs because the dog is still too warm. Double coated dogs are not insulated from the heat. Humid conditions (and other risk factors) are way worse ( eg cars) and just because its early doesn’t mean its safe (the last loss we are aware of was before 9 am).
