SPIRIT IN NAME AND NATURE

The story of a beautiful horse and his miracle medical journey.
Please forgive the lengthy post but it’s a special story, worth telling and we’d like to thank our client for so kindly allowing us to share it, thank you 🙏

Spirit is beautiful home bred gelding. Out of a much loved homebred, Catherston Dazzler mare by Utopian Opposition, so he has a truly excellent horse heritage and quality breeding.
Dear Spirit was born at home in the New Forest at 2am, 18th June 2017, Father’s Day!
Over the years he certainly lived up to his name, with a personality to match and growing to 16.3hh.
Spirit was backed at 5 years old and everything was going well, with the plan that he would have a career in eventing. However, 6 months later Spirit came in from the field slightly lame with the right hind very slightly swollen, nothing to worry about initially, or so it was thought.
After a few days of no real improvement, a call was made to us here at Seadown Equine and our own Clinical Director and equine veterinary surgeon, Laura Trigg duly went out.
A scan and an X-ray showed excessive fluid within the joint, and the veterinary recommendation was further rest for Spirit but he didn’t improve.

Laura picks up the story - “In terms of the imaging, Ultrasound scans revealed synovitis of the right hind fetlock joint initially and a small bone fragment was seen on radiography. Sometimes horses can have bone fragments in this location which don’t cause lameness so its clinical relevance was uncertain at this stage. The inflammation of the joint on Ultrasound was more concerning.
After a few weeks of conservative management Spirit remained lame on his RH especially when the joint was flexed. The swelling of the joint had not improved so it was decided that for the best athletic outcome for the horse he should undergo arthroscopy. Tragically, at the time of surgery the fetlock joint was found to be badly damaged and it was going to be touch and go as to whether Spirit would ever return to soundness”

Spirit’s owner describes receiving the news - “I received a call saying the news wasn’t good, a fragment of bone had been found which had torn up the cartilage and roughed off the fetlock joint, even they were surprised as by now he was hardly lame, but his competition career would be over and it was in doubt whether he could ever be ridden again. I was completely devastated, Spirit was certainly not a horse that could be kept as a field companion or at best a hacking horse, he was always happier doing something - a sharp horse that had to be occupied”

“Once home Laura called to discuss the findings, knowing Spirit and me very well, she suggested that we could try stem cell in the joint as he was still growing and producing his own cells. It was expensive, wasn’t guaranteed to work and had a long slow rehabilitation period, so a lot of patience and work was required. I was willing to try as the alternative was unthinkable.
The stem cells were injected and the long road to recovery began with no guarantees. Initial box rest was a 6 week nightmare, then turnout to a small paddock didn’t work so we just turned him out with his mate for a few months with all fingers crossed. The first scan showed progress so in hand work began very slowly 5 mins for first week and a couple of minutes more each week. Again a challenge, think toddler tantrum in a 500 kg teenage body! More scans followed showing good results.
A year later veterinary permission was given for ridden work to slowly begin, small periods of walking calmly. I wish someone had given Spirit that memo! He did love to test out the hindlegs by standing up on them! The final scan a few months later showed a normal joint.
18 months after that with careful schoolwork, hacking, pole work, treadmills and lots of help , support and tissues from many people, Spirit is doing amazingly well and is aiming for his first eventing competition at the end of the season. ❤️
I am so grateful to Laura at Seadown for her support encouragement, professionalism and help in making an informed choice, for both the treatment and the rehabilitation. Thank you.”🙏

ANNOUNCEMENT - DENTAL DAY ON 22ND AUGUST
Just to let you know that due to demand we are having another one of our very popular dental days on Friday 22nd August.

There will once again be hour long appointments available for clients to bring their horse or pony, into the Hythe hospital for a thorough oral review, dental rasping and an oroscopic exam.
Time slots start at 9am sharp and are on a first come first served basis, so please don't delay.

An oroscope (video exam) is a specialised camera that we use to look at the mouth in detail - it will let clients see the 'before and 'after' and we can use it to highlight any areas of interest and monitor things within the mouth.
The cost will be £85 for dental, sedation and oroscope (horses and ponies must be sedated for the oroscopic exam)
It really is a great opportunity.

These dental days are becoming very popular so please book your slot now by calling the hospital at Hythe.

Thank you!🙏

Friendship is one of life's greatest treasures, and International Friendship Day 2025 is celebrated today, 30th July.

Whilst we celebrate friendship with our own family and friends, we all know that we also have a unique bond with our faithful four-legged animal companions.

They have a profound impact on our lives, with many saying that experiencing love for an animal can unlock a deeper understanding of oneself and the world.

One thing we know for sure, is that we are so very lucky to have our horses and ponies in our lives. ❤️
Long may it be so.

What a lovely donkey story …❤️

A donkey named Diesel, who had gone missing during a hiking and hunting trip in 2018 near the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, was spotted years later living with a herd of wild Roosevelt elk in Northern California.

The discovery was made by professional triathlete and bowhunter Max Fennell while scouting in the area.

He captured photos showing Diesel grazing alongside the elk.
Over time, it seems the donkey adapted completely to wild life and was accepted by the elk herd.

Observers described him as healthy, relaxed, and clearly integrated into the group, exhibiting behaviors like grazing and roaming with the elk as though he were one of them.

Wildlife officials and animal experts were amazed by Diesel's ability to survive alone for so long and develop a cross-species bond.
The phenomenon is rare but not unheard of; donkeys are social animals, and Diesel likely found companionship and safety in the elk herd.

Since he didn’t appear distressed or in danger, authorities chose not to interfere and allowed him to remain with the elk, effectively letting him “live his best life” in the wild.

IMPORTANT: LAMINITIS WARNING

Just a friendly reminder that with all the recent rain and warm humid conditions, the grass is growing quickly in many fields.
If a horse is susceptible to laminitis, then almost any grass-based forage can precipitate the condition at any time in the year.
It is important to recognise signs of laminitis (‘Footy’ behaviour, shifting weight in front, reluctance to walk/turn/pick up feet etc)
If you suspect that your horse may have laminitis or need more information, then please do get in touch with us as soon as possible.

Thank you 🙏

It seems this idea of vinyl cutouts or decals displaying images of the horses inside trailers and horse boxes is getting more popular.
Anything that can improve road safety for our precious horses, has to be a positive thing.

Whilst we have been preparing an interesting new patient story, the kind client shared this video.
We thought you might also like to see it.
Perhaps you’ve also found your own horse helpful in carrying out stable chores? 😂
Wishing all our wonderful patients, clients and supporters a great weekend.
Keep safe and take care.

Wildfire seen for miles towers over fire engines in forest blaze.

Flames rose high above the fire engines next to Moonhills car park in Beaulieu last night, as smoke poured into the sky above Hilltop at around 10pm.

Please be careful and keep safe in the forest at the moment, it’s tinder dry and of course these fires can also be deadly for animals and wildlife.

Thank you 🙏

A wildfire torched the New Forest at Hilltop near Beaulieu last night as fire engines rushed to tackle the towering blaze.

Have you heard Warrior's story? 🐴

Those who walk through Southampton Sports Centre by the golf course may have missed the memorial stone to the wonderful horse, Warrior 🐴

Even if you had seen it, you may have struggled to read what or to whom it is dedicated due to its worn and weathered inscription. But, if you pass by now you will see that it has been beautifully cleaned, with the inscription rejuvenated.

Warrior served with the military throughout WW1 during which he sustained several injuries in the Advance on the Aisne, the scars of which he bore for the rest of his life. After recovering from front-line surgery to extract shrapnel, he resumed his duties in further action.

He returned to Britain, via Southampton, in 1919 and after three months convalescence at the Swaythling Remount Depot, he was purchased by Hilda Moore who presented him to the Southampton Police Force. During the next sixteen years, working with the mounted section, he became much loved by the people of the town until his death in August 1935 aged 26 years.

He was buried, with a ceremony, in tribute to the love and respect in which he was held. His grave is marked by this memorial stone on which his history is briefly and now clearly outlined.

Good morning and important message:
The heat is building over the next few days and it’s going to be hot 🥵
In very hot weather, horses can become dehydrated, lethargic and generally reluctant to work. Severe heat stress can cause colic, diarrhea or collapse, so it is important to keep your horse cool.
We have already posted some top tips on this page recently, to help you manage your horses well-being during periods of very hot weather but if you have any queries please don't hesitate to contact us.
Thank you. 🙏
Enjoy the sunshine but please do take care and keep safe
