These next few days I am sitting these gorgeous dogs 🐕

Lola Lab X & Buzz Collie
Both rescues!

Buzz is slightly nervous of new people mainly males, however this is the third time I have met him.
Giving him plenty of time to initiate contact by avoiding eye contact, throwing high value rewards near by, moving onto treats caught in the air, Buzz was soon taking treats from my hand.
He’s so comfortable with me now , I managed to get him into my car for a trip to the local rented dog orchard.
They loved it 🐾❤️‍🩹
What great dogs!
Both now fast asleep 💤

It was lovely to see Benji and his handler again he’s certainly gained more confidence these past months.

Nervous - Reactive Dog
Are they Trigger Stacking? Daily?

Trigger stacking. What is it?
Anxious Bucket. What is it?
Trigger stacking and what causes it!

TS
This is when your dog reaches a critical stage and overreacts. This can happen to any dog at any time and is something that is often overlooked and can go some to understanding why our dogs behave the way they do.

AB
Think of it as an empty bucket at the start of the day, this fills quickly with each experience throughout the day.
Stress, anxiety, nervousness are all factors in filling the anxious bucket.

If you imagine every dog has a bucket and every time something stressful or exciting happens that bucket fills up a little. This is called Trigger Stacking and eventually that bucket will overflow causing a possibly an over reaction to something relatively simple. Some dogs have a bucket to store their stress in and deal with everything in their stride, never overflowing. Some dogs have a small bucket and even if they encounter a noisy motorbike or another dog barking down the road, this then can tip them over the edge, each separate experience fills their bucket, it’s really worth knowing that it takes at least 72hrs to empty their anxious bucket.
Many rescue dogs sadly have had lots of negative experience in their lives whether that’s a rescue puppy or rescue dog this normally means they have behavioural issues and suffer with anxiety therefore their bucket fills much quicker.
Many dog trainer professionals are aware of this and normally advise to walk rescue dogs less and instead work on confidence building training indoors to help keep their bucket extremely low, and help them become more resilient instead.

This trigger stacking can go some way to explain why our dogs are seemingly unpredictable. Do they react more at the end of the day or on their last walk of the day? Do they react more to some of their peers but not always? Do they bark at every other person they see or just certain times of the day?
To help you and your rescue we would suggest getting a daily diary and keep notes on your dogs daily walks and experiences. If you feel your dog has done too much give your dog a free day- miss your long walks- brain games etc will be far more beneficial to your rescue dog.
