‘The delivery driver has left my gate open and my dog has escaped’
‘Anyone know whose dog this is? It’s been wandering around the streets with no owner in sight’
‘Can someone keep an eye out for Fluffy? He just ran out the front door again’

I can’t count the amount of posts I’ve seen recently on social media that have had one of the above titled with a picture of a beloved family pet attached.
Threshold training is a hugely overlooked skill that everyone needs to be enforcing with their dogs in order to help keep them safe!
All you need to do to work on this behaviour is chuck on a long training line for management, solidify your sit stay and add in organised distractions to help proof the behaviour.

Side note- 2 of the dogs in this video aren’t even mine, they’ve been staying for residential training.

A before video of what this area looked like in the comments 😂 it’s been a year long labour of love!

Saying it louder for the people in the back…

ITS NOT THE TOOL, it’s how you use it ✌🏼
Put in the work and not only will your dog benefit but so will you!

One of my dogs, Rumour demonstrating loose lead walking on 3 different tools plus off lead heel. (She also hasn’t walked on a harness in a year and a half so I really tested her 😅)

“Slip leads are choke leads”
“Slip leads can case damage to your dogs neck”“They’re cruel”

Tell me what looks more damaging in this video, the flat collar in clip 1 or the slip collar/French collar in video 2?
Did you know dogs can sustain injury from a collapsed trachea by pulling constantly on a flat collar?
I’m sure you’ve all heard the horrible rasping and choking sounds coming from dogs passing by that are pulling on their leads 🐕‍🦺

Tools alone won’t solve the issues you’re having and I am always saying- ‘it’s not the tool, it’s how you use it’. So you must back up any tool whether it’s a Halti, harness, slip lead or collar & lead.
Without the training you will not progress and you could still cause damage to your dog with any of the tools stated above.

These 2 lab cross pups are having weekly walk and train sessions with me to help improve their overall training. They just had session 2 on Friday and I’m looking forward to seeing their results in the coming weeks👏🏼

At 6 months old Risqué had her first stooge appointment 👏🏼
If you’ve trained with me you will know that I love to use my own dogs to help other dogs with their socialisation. I have quite the mix of personalities in my pack of 4 which is a handy tool as a dog trainer.
In this session one of the goals was to help boost confidence and to work on dog to dog mannerisms. Plus a little play at the end because everyone worked so hard!

Hands up 🙌🏽 if I’ve ever used one of my dogs in a training session with you ❤️

It’s not the tool, it’s how you use it ✌🏼

Seized in the moment home footage incoming!

Is your dog really crate trained?
Are they able to be in their crate, happy, content & quiet?
Is crate training important to you?
Crate training is a huge part of owning a dog of any age.
They will at some point be in a cage if they go to the vet for an operation 🧑‍⚕️

You may need to use kennels 🏨

If they become injured your vet will recommend crated rest while they recover 🛌

Your puppy will need uninterrupted sleep throughout the day and the best way to give them that is a crate 🐶

In the car, you want the to travel as safe as possible right? 🚙

If your dog is not people friendly and you have visitors over, where does the dog go for that ‘safe space’? 🧘‍♀️

All these scenarios need to be trained first so your dogs is fully comfortable in that situation and you don’t ever need to ‘get rid’ due to your puppy outgrowing it.

Risqué loves her crate as do all my other dogs, I dont ‘ditch the crates’ as they mature. She’s always happy to go in, never protests & never cries unless she has just woken from a nap and needs a wee 🚽
Even if it isn’t nap time and I need to put her in her crate because I cannot fully give her my attention to make sure she isn’t stealing or destroying things as puppies do, she’s always happy to be in there watching my every move 😂

Please crate train your dogs & ensure at any age they get uninterrupted rest away from the family.

Do you wish your dog would respond to commands this efficiently?
Do you have a multi dog household and are struggling to get your dogs to the same level of training?

A couple of free tips for you:
1. Tidy up their obedience individually (sit means sit, down means down and don’t forget that all important release cue)
2. Stop over communicating (if you are asking for the down your dog must down if they do not, go back to the basics of luring positions you ask for but only ask for the behaviour once)

Watch with the volume up on this video to hear how many times these dogs are asked to perform the behaviour and what verbal cues they are given.

Socialisation for Risqué at 15 weeks old.

What does socialisation look like to you and your puppy?

For my dogs, socialising is all about seeing lots of things from 8 weeks old like-
Livestock🐴
Vehicles 🚜
Children 👧
Different environments 🌲🏗️🏭
Other known, friendly dogs 🐶
Then learning to focus and work around these things.
That’s it. I know my dogs are already social so I don’t need to push dogs and people on them, quite the opposite.

Don’t wait for that typical puppy class that society says you must participate in. Start now with a good trainer that is able to offer in person, tailored to you, 121 training.
