Came back to pay my little pal Vinnie a visit!

Vinnie is a young and very strong minded English Bull Terrier who really struggles to control himself when he becomes excitable, it quickly turns to frustration and he doesn’t take the word no lightly.

Just like people we have different personalities in dogs. Some are more strong minded than others due to many factors and some are much more biddable and passive. A quick telling off is enough for some to deter from behaviour where as some people need bigger consequences for behaviour - it’s exactly the same for dogs.

Vinnie is a true bull terrier at heart so if he’s doing something wrong and you went to interrupt or move him he see’s that as a game or as a challenge and he has learnt if he nips or mouths it makes humans dance around like prey which is fun to him. Quick movements activates prey drive which activates chase followed by biting.

We have given him appropriate play and chase outlets to satisfy his innate desires and we are working on more settled behaviours when they are due. Basically it is about teaching Vinnie there is a time and a place for everything, just not all at once and definitely not on humans!

One of the things he really struggled with was regulating himself when family/friends came over. If you sat on the couch he would be on your head, biting your hair or your clothes where as today Vinnie learnt how to chill out and take a load off aswell as understanding to respect a space boundary meaning we could have a cup of tea and a nice chat with Vin having a lovely snooze 💤

Teaching your dog a offswitch is by far one of the harder skills for a driven dog to learn but it is essential to their wellbeing. Well done Vin 💙

I came back to pay my little pal Jasper a visit 🥹

We had a 2 day bootcamp very recently to help with Jasper’s reactivity to the other dogs in the family and out on walks. We’ve made some cracking progress ✨

Since I last saw Jasper he has been neutered which put him in a different routine but now we are back to business. Today we focussed on Jaspers obsession of attacking household appliances like brushes/vacuums and even the outdoor bins 🗑️

He is made up of a few breeds but mainly Staffy which has given him a instinct to chase and attack things that move and he finds it fun to put it simply. As a puppy it was encouraged as it was cute but now he’s older it’s annoying so realistically Jasper doesn’t know he’s doing anything wrong he’s just doing what instinct tells him to do.

We had the brush, the vacuum and the bins out today with no issues. I showed his owner how to interrupt the behaviour sequence and how to instill better behaviours such as ignoring what’s going on and learning to hold back on his impulses 👌

Well done Jasper - what a great session 💙

In Winter and the colder months there is a dramatic drop in the dogs you see out and about on a day to day basis and it makes me really sad that some dogs miss out on what could be their favourite time of the day.

A walk is many dogs favourite time of the day!
Owning two spaniels my girls live for the outdoors and doing spaniel things! Sun,rain, cloud or snow they are there

As humans we all have hobbies and things that we do for ourselves to relieve stress, hit personal goals and to get away from the everyday grind - If you ask me our dogs need exactly the same too and a short walk around the block just doesn’t cut it for many dogs and this is where we can run into issues.

Dependant on the dog you have will depend on what they are looking for so I’ll use Blue as an example in this case.

For a St Bernard Blue has quite a lot of energy. Too much pent up energy causes his brain to fizz and spill over which affects his decision making and ability to think so I always ensure on walks he has an opportunity to get rid of his inner fizz.

A good hours walk for Blue does the job! Walking and carrying 70+ kilo’s is heavy work so with a few added bonuses we really make sure his walk makes the difference to him.

When we walk together, we work together! He will engage, he will match walking pace and he will walk & listen really well. We practise his heel work, we work on sits and downs and we work on impulse control.

When we arrive to where we are going he always has time to be Blue and to be a
dog! He goes where he wants to go and makes his own choices. He has a run, a good roll around for his sensory needs and usually mooches and follows his nose OR he will slot back by my side and work with me.

Towards the end of the walk he is back on the lead to bring his brain back down ready for the walk home. At this point he is usually trailing behind me 😆

Giving Blue what he needs he is settled and pretty much passed out for the rest of the day and is really relaxed as he has scratched that itch! A hyped up dog at the end of your walk can suggest that all of that energy is still bubbling away underneath the surface.

Giving your dog variation, choice and agency
is vital to their welfare and mental wellbeing. Include different tasks/games/routines for your dogs on walks and watch the magic happen. The best thing about it is that it is all centred round connection with the handler ❤️

Each breed is different and each dog is different and will require different outlets and “hobbies”. Getting to know them and providing those outlets will only make your relationship better and stronger.

Don’t just be the thing that holds your dog back on the end of the lead, be the thing that brings their walks to life 🐾

How can we help you & your reactive dog?

📍 Every dog starts with 1:1 training sessions where we can carry out a behavioural assessment to understand your dogs behaviour and what they are trying to communicate with us.

📍We work on you and your dog! We build your skillsets, we build and reform your relationship. We help you understand your dogs behaviour as an individual, how to enrich them and their lives and understand what makes them tick and not. Most importantly we teach you how to communicate with one another and to build a better balanced relationship.

📍 We provide safe and constructive ways to expose your dog to our dogs & other dogs to build their confidence, build new skillsets and to undo any unwanted behaviour patterns.

📍 We introduce you to our group sessions which are clients only and a fantastic way to expose you and your dog putting your new skills to the test in real world environments.

📍From here we get you out into the world onto our pack walks with many more dogs and layer in further distractions whilst still working on those vital life skills and your handling around more unpredictable triggers.

Here is a sneaky peak into our latest pack walk with Luckys Paws 😍❤️

If we seem like your kind of team then get in touch with us today to start your journey! 💙🧡
