Came back to pay my little pal Vinnie a visit!
Vinnie is a young and very strong minded English Bull Terrier who really struggles to control himself when he becomes excitable, it quickly turns to frustration and he doesn’t take the word no lightly.
Just like people we have different personalities in dogs. Some are more strong minded than others due to many factors and some are much more biddable and passive. A quick telling off is enough for some to deter from behaviour where as some people need bigger consequences for behaviour - it’s exactly the same for dogs.
Vinnie is a true bull terrier at heart so if he’s doing something wrong and you went to interrupt or move him he see’s that as a game or as a challenge and he has learnt if he nips or mouths it makes humans dance around like prey which is fun to him. Quick movements activates prey drive which activates chase followed by biting.
We have given him appropriate play and chase outlets to satisfy his innate desires and we are working on more settled behaviours when they are due. Basically it is about teaching Vinnie there is a time and a place for everything, just not all at once and definitely not on humans!
One of the things he really struggled with was regulating himself when family/friends came over. If you sat on the couch he would be on your head, biting your hair or your clothes where as today Vinnie learnt how to chill out and take a load off aswell as understanding to respect a space boundary meaning we could have a cup of tea and a nice chat with Vin having a lovely snooze 💤
Teaching your dog a offswitch is by far one of the harder skills for a driven dog to learn but it is essential to their wellbeing. Well done Vin 💙
