I’m interested to know how many dogs other professional dog walkers actually do walk?
We have a few groups of 6 with small dogs in. They all have the needed skills, behaviours and temperaments to keep things safe. We use leads.
The locations are quiet - we often don’t see a soul.
The walks are structured. We include regular reinforcement of existing training, we play games with the dogs and give them tasks to keep them occupied and keep control throughout the walk. We use scent work to keep things calm.
You all love our group photos.
The level of control, training and engagement with the dogs that goes into our photos clearly demonstrates the bond between the dogs and handler. You try asking 6 dogs to sit, wait and smile.
All at the same time. It doesn’t happen by accident !
We then run some smaller groups (most of our groups, in fact 70%) if we have any pullers or the dogs are larger and we don’t feel comfortable that we can physically restrain the weight in public. If the dogs aren’t the best listeners or don’t have basic obedience.
We have some dogs we don’t let off at all.
We have some we walk entirely alone.
Safety is extremely subjective and entirely dog centric. Or it should be!
I’m not sure I can subscribe to a blanket approach.
“only walk 4”
Because it’s just not how it works in the real world is it?
Some regulation in the dog walking world does need to happen - but I do worry what that might look like.
Say the council give us a ‘4 dog limit’
4 Leonbergers is very different to 4 Frenchies isn’t it?
There has to be an element of basic knowledge and common sense too!
I think I’d like to see the introduction of a knowledge based dog walking and handling license.
A test. Like the driving test theory test.
Basic questions like first aid knowledge.
Local laws.
Basic training and handling techniques.
How to safely transport dogs.
Canine behaviour.
I know there are certifications out there like this.
We have several of them ourselves.
Experience counts for a lot too. So practical experience shadowing other professionals is probably one of the most important things an aspiring dog walker can do. It should be mandatory for insurance purposes. In my opinion anyway.
It’s such a complex topic.
We would love to hear your thoughts 💭
