Please be aware that we will be closed for the day tomorrow, Wednesday 3rd June, for full staff training. If you’ve got an appointment in the morning, please do keep it, we'll still be seeing you!

We’re taking some time to update some of our equipment and processes, and the formal training is really important to keep up our high standards of care that we pride ourselves on!

We’ll be back to our usual hours on Thursday 4th.

Thanks for your understanding!

🐾 Passion is at the heart of cancer care. For Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month ( ), we are celebrating Week 4’s theme: Passion!

In an oncology referral practice, our Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) bring an extraordinary level of dedication to work every single day. Their passion shines through in the meticulous delivery of complex chemotherapy treatments, the advanced monitoring of surgical patients, and the gentle, comforting cuddles given to reassure a nervous pet. Oncology nursing requires immense clinical skill, but it is our team’s deep emotional investment and unwavering commitment to giving our patients the best possible quality of life that truly defines them.

We are incredibly proud of our nursing team’s passion, empathy, and expertise—not just this month, but every single day. 💛🩺

In veterinary oncology nursing, empathy is the vital emotional connection that brings together our medical expertise and genuine compassion during end-of-life care. As oncology nurses, we're not simply treating an illness; we're supporting families as they navigate the often difficult and unpredictable path of a pet’s cancer journey.

A key part of our support for clients is through our palliative care clinic. Each patient is paired with a dedicated nurse who stays in touch with the family throughout their palliative care journey. This might mean emails, phone calls, in person visits, or a mix of all three. Building strong bonds with carers helps us manage the final stages of life in the best possible way for each individual patient.

In the end, practising empathy in this field turns routine procedures, like giving chemotherapy or managing pain, into a caring, collaborative effort that honours the animal’s quality of life and provides comfort to their humans.

🦊Percival is one of our frequent flyers and his favourite is the fox, who is very well loved at this point and currently missing a nose!

Week 2 of veterinary nursing awareness months shifts the spotlight to mental health and wellbeing. We all understand that veterinary settings can be incredibly emotional spaces for both visitors and staff alike. We feel this profoundly every day given the nature of our work! Being the strong, supportive person often relied on by our lovely clients during their pets’ journeys can take a toll on our mental resilience. So, how do we look after the backbone of our practice?

💬Well, we talk — a lot! Open communication of any kind beats pretending everything's fine all the time. It’s absolutely okay for our team to feel sad and even shed a few tears when saying goodbye to a beloved patient they’ve cared for over months. In fact, it’s something we really encourage!

🍪Snacks! For the patients and the people! Our team are feeders through and through. Feeding the patients makes the team happy and feeding the team makes the boss happy! Along with our goodies for the dogs and cats, we have fruit, biscuits, bread, juice and a little tuck shop with quick grab lunches!

🔔We also safeguard our team’s break and lunch times. Taking a proper step back from the clinical environment to unwind and recharge is crucial. It helps us come back clearer and more focused, ready to give our very best to every patient.

🗣️We hold regular team meetings where everyone has the opportunity to share their thoughts and be heard, and we also have monthly one-to-one meetings to chat about any concerns, review progress, and set both personal and professional goals.

Compassionate veterinary nursing in an oncology takes on many forms! On the technical side, it’s incredibly precise work—handling chemotherapy drugs with exacting safety standards and keeping a close eye on blood results to manage the side effects of treatment. But the real magic is in the ‘soft’ stuff. It’s the nurse who remembers exactly which ear that patient likes scratched during their infusion, or the one who spots that a patient is feeling a bit flat before the machines even pick it up. It’s about the nurse who’s expertly prepping a cat for surgery while taking the time to tuck a warm blanket around them or using a bit of "low-stress" handling to make a nervous rescue dog feel safe. Even finding their patients favourite toy and getting it out for them every week. Huge thanks to Dotti for demonstrating this point!

We’re not just treating a disease; we’re holding the hand of worried owners through months of ups and downs, translating complex results and treatment plans into plain English and making sure that, above all else, the animal’s quality of life and dignity come first.

Compassion is the heartbeat of Oncology Nursing!

Behind every treatment plan is a Registered Veterinary Nurse dedicated to being the patient’s advocate. For us, compassion means more than just a gentle touch; it’s about meticulous pain management, reducing anxiety during visits, and understanding the unique bond between a pet and their family.

For , we’re delighted to celebrate our fantastic nursing team, highlighting how they keep our practice running seamlessly each day and create a warm, caring sanctuary for both pets and their owners. Over the next week, we look forward to sharing a glimpse into a day in the life of our nurses, from the first visit to the last, and everything in between!
