Meet Mori, a 13-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier who was recently diagnosed with diabetes.
Mori was admitted on the 18th of May suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a serious and potentially life-threatening complication of diabetes. DKA occurs when the body does not have enough insulin to use glucose (blood sugar) for energy, causing it to break down fat instead, which leads to the production of harmful ketones.
On admission, Mori was very lethargic and inappetent. She was started on an insulin CRI (constant rate infusion) to help stabilise her blood glucose levels. Throughout her hospital stay, regular glucose monitoring was required to assess her progress something Mori tolerated incredibly well and bravely throughout.
After 48 hours, Moriโs glucose levels had returned to a normal range, allowing her to come off the CRI. She remained hospitalised for a further 24 hours for close monitoring while we established an insulin dose that would keep her levels stable. Mori was successfully discharged on the 21st of May.
Mori went home with a Libre monitor, which continuously measures her blood glucose levels through an app. This allows both her owners and our team to closely monitor her glucose levels and manage her diabetes effectively.
Since being discharged, Mori has returned for a check-up and greeted the team with a very waggy bottom. She truly is the sweetest girl, and we are so happy to see her doing so well โค๏ธ
