‼️Uncharacteristically serious but important post‼️
I want to talk about ticks. These spidery bitey bastards are everywhere at the moment, and their bite can be life changing. The first photo shows a tick that I pulled off our gorgeous Diddly Darcie this morning. It was hidden behind her cheekbone. The second photo shows our much missed Denny Mars, who contracted Lymes disease which unleashed a whole host of autoimmune issues. He was 11-years-old when I had to make the horrible decision that enough was enough. He had a little girl that loved him, and in doing right by him, I broke her heart.
Late last summer, one of our (human) girls had a diagnosis of Lymes disease. Thankfully, I followed a very strong maternal gut instinct that she had been bitten by a tick when I saw an odd bite mark. She never developed the much publicised ‘bulls eye’ rash and I didn’t see a tick. I did have to go full-on pushy mother to get her seen and then treated because there was no rash. Later blood results showed that my gut instinct was indeed right, and she was positive for Lymes.
Lymes Disease is a bastard. It can wreck havoc on the body, and it can lie dormant for years before coming back with vengeance. Please check yourself and your children for ticks, and if you have the slightest inkling of a gut feeling that there could be a dodgy bite, get antibiotics and a blood test promptly.
In the first series of the pod, Tania and I spoke to Melissa Smith about her experience with Lymes. It’s quite harrowing, but well worth listening to. Melissa shares her knowledge of the disease, which is vastly different to that you’ll read on NHS information pages. So if you do one thing today, have a listen to this and make sure you keep your eyes peeled on yourself, your kids and your animals for ticks (and use a tick remover) and where you can, use a spot on on animals to prevent them bringing the bastards in.
