Finally someone talking sense and voicing my own opinions, well done to the This Morning vet who quite rightly brought up the terrible tragedy of a 4 yr old being mauled to death by a pet bought a few weeks earlier. If only people would realise that toddlers/ children should never be left on their own with a dog, regardless of how long you have owned the pet. My granddaughter lives with me and is now nearly 5, in this time I have kept my dog and Maia separated by dogs gates if left alone for even a short period.
In addition to this too many people are obsessed with getting dogs who look a certain way or who are deemed the Dog of the moment, the one everyone wants as it’s fashionable. little consequence is therefore given to the breed, it’s temperament or if god forbid it is bought from a stranger what history the dog has had with a child if any. Instances such as these as well as bad choices made during training such as grabbing and pulling the dog by it’s collar roughly, grabbing it by the scruff of the neck or smacking the dog can have an affect on a dogs outlook and consequently it’s actions. Add to this dogs who are bought onto the market who are larger breeds bred with aggression in mind to become guard dogs as such, and people buy them when they have little experience of the larger breed, temperament and bring them into the homes of kiddies. The Predatory Motor pattern of a dog going back to its roots is to source, hunt and kill, therefore when you have breeds bred for aggression having a toddler of similar size looking directly into the dogs eyes can be seen as a threat, add to this the squeals a toddler can make can easily be mistaken by a dog as the same noise prey makes when a dog catches and despatches it, yet people bring these dogs into a family home for all intents and purposes opening their door to the fairytale wolf. Something needs to be done to ensure people pick the correct dog or even better a puppy so that it fits the family make up of the household and always bare in mind that the bigger the dog and it’s jaws the more damage it can ultimately cause. I am not making a sweeping statement as many larger breeds have been bought up well with kids by owners who have experience of the breed and bought them through reputable sources such as the kennel club, people really should buy wisely to receive the best breed/crossbreed and realise that reputable breeders or rehoming centres will 100% want to find the right owner, and not just any owner 👍 sadly we live in a society where any idiot(s) can buy a dog……but ultimately given the rise in dog attacks, at what price 😡
