Today is not about the massage BUT about seeing signs early 👀

3 years ago(2023) my beautiful Hazel started rejecting cheek rubs and touching her head, instead of cuddles I got showned pinned ears and walking away from me 😒
I checked everything but her dental check up was last on the list and then I wished it could have been first.
I took her to the Equine Dental clinic and results were shocking 😲 I have to mention she had dental checks every single year she was with me.

It resulted in 2 teeth extractions, plus 6 fillings and recovering a gum disease called diastema (Diastema is the clinical term for a gap or space between two teeth)

Luckily I took her there in time and everything is under control 😇 and improving every time 🙏 and most importantly Hazel is pain free 🙌

Horses are incredibly good at adapting. They compensate, adjust, and keep working long before they show obvious signs that something feels uncomfortable. That is why bodywork appointments are often about far more than simply “fixing” a problem. They are part of a much bigger picture of supporting long-term comfort, movement, and performance.

The good news? Some of the biggest differences often come from the little things owners do consistently between appointments. Tiny habits can help maintain mobility, reduce tension build-up, improve body awareness, and allow owners to spot changes much earlier before they become bigger issues.

Here are five simple but incredibly effective things owners can do between bodywork visits that genuinely support their horse’s musculoskeletal health:

🐴 Prioritising Recovery Days

Muscle do not strengthen during work. They strengthen during recovery ✨️🙌

Thanks to the deseased deer skeleton I kept it (by then I didn't have a clue I will do this, I did it for antlers 🤗)
I could examine the skeletal anatomy which I find fascinating, sadly the deer had a broken tibia bone, more likely hit by a car and jumped into the field, but what an educational moment 🙌

The BICEPS FEMORIS is one of the largest muscles in your horse's hindquarters.
It is literally for movement and strength but ironically, it is incredibly superficial, only really being covered by skin and fascia.

🐴It is one of the first muscles to activate when your horse pushes off the ground, so it is really important for strong expressive movement

🐴To build up this important muscle, include exercises like:
✅hill work
✅transitions on the slope
✅raised pole work
✅backing up in hand ( every day task for us - I ask my Hazel to step back a few steps before I place her feed bowl on the ground...now she does it without me asking her :)

These encourage engagement of the hind end and activate the BICEPS FEMORIS through controlled, weight bearing movement.

AIM for:
✅Rhythm
✅Balance
✅Straightness
rather than speed or power.

CONSISTENCY is a key, please make sure you are turning these things into a regular routine and not just for one week then nothing :)

Lots of Love and Have Fun,
Evita x
