๐Ÿพ Florence the Boxer ๐Ÿพ

We were delighted to welcome Florence to the clinic today for her first course of puppy vaccinations. This milestone marks the beginning of her journey toward building a strong immune system, allowing her to safely explore the world as she grows. ๐Ÿ’—

Florenceโ€™s owner is no stranger to the breed, having shared her home with Boxers for many years. It was wonderful to discuss how Florence is already living up to her heritage, showing off the signature "big personality" that Boxer enthusiasts know and love. ๐Ÿถ

๐ŸงŠ Are ice cubes safe for dogs? ๐ŸงŠ

Yes. In moderation and in healthy dogs, ice cubes, bone broth ice lollies, frozen vegetables like carrots, all make a refreshing and safe snack for your dog, especially in this hot weather โ˜€๏ธ

โš ๏ธ Never attempt to use ice cubes as a treatment, if you suspect heat stroke.

๐Ÿ’ฆ GET THEM WET ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป GET THEM TO A VET ๐Ÿฉบ

Soak your dog with as much COLD water as possible, but do not delay getting them to a vet as a result.

The colder the water, the better. Evidence has disproved the perceived risks of cold water causing shock, instead water that is not cold enough fails to reduce your dogs core temperature quickly enough.

โ˜€๏ธโš ๏ธ Highs of 29ยฐc today โš ๏ธ โ˜€๏ธ

HEAT STROKE MYTH BUSTING

Myth: You should only use tepid water to cool a dog with heatstroke. Cold water can cause shock.

TRUTH: Use the closest cool or cold water immediately, rapid cooling saves lives. A hose (run through any warm standing water) paddling pool, even a pond can be used if close to hand. Tepid water is not effective enough. Get them wet, get them to a vet โ€ผ๏ธ

Myth - Dogs in other hot countries cope just fine

TRUTH - Dogs raised in the UK are not โ€˜usedโ€™ to consistently hot temperature, this spike in temperature is new to them and difficult to suddenly adjust to. Dogs in hot countries can and do get heat stroke โ˜€๏ธ

Myth - Only dogs can get heat stroke

TRUTH - All pets are at risk of heat stroke. Rabbit hutches can turn in to saunas, adding pet safe ice blocks can help to cool them down or bringing them inside your home, even just for the day ๐Ÿฐ

Myth - You must never give ice cubes to dogs

TRUTH - Unless youโ€™re concerned your dog has heat stroke, itโ€™s okay to give ice cubes, homemade dog safe ice lollies to healthy dogs, in moderation ๐ŸงŠ

Myth - If a dog has heat stroke, squirting lemon juice into their mouth will help by reducing the amount of saliva the dog is producing

TRUTH - This absolutely does not work. The dog is simply producing additional saliva whilst panting, in an attempt to reduce their core temperature. Not only does putting lemon juice in their mouth not work, but you may be delaying lifesaving veterinary treatment ๐Ÿ‹ โš ๏ธ

Myth - As long as you walk in the shade, itโ€™s fine

TRUTH - In the shade, you may feel 10-15 degrees cooler, but the air temperature is the same as the temperature in full sunlight. Shade only feels cooler because you are avoiding solar radiation. The temperature you see on your phone is the measurement of air temperature, not the temperature of the suns rays on you โ›…๏ธ

Myth - You need direct sunlight to get heat stroke

TRUTH - You only need heat to get heat stroke ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Myth - Some dogs just love the sun and will lay in it for hours, so they must be okay

TRUTH - Some dogs, given the chance, would make lots of dangerous choices - eating things they shouldnโ€™t, running into the road etc. they rely on us to keep them safe ๐Ÿถ

Myth - Itโ€™s okay to leave a dog in the car IF you are only going to be a few minutes

TRUTH - It can take as little as 6 minutes for a dog to die in a hot car and most people passing wonโ€™t know how long youโ€™ve been gone ๐Ÿš˜ ๐Ÿ˜ฐ

โš ๏ธ If you have any concerns that your pet has heat stroke please seek veterinary advice immediately

๐Ÿพ Tiny, Tough, and Totally Adorable! ๐Ÿพ

We wrapped up last month with a very special visit from the smallest star in the clinicโ€”meet Mabel!

Mabel stopped by for her very first set of vaccinations, and while she might be small enough to fit in your pocket, she has a personality that fills the whole room. She took her jabs like a total champ and spent the rest of her appointment making sure every member of our team gave her a cuddle and lots of treats. ๐Ÿ’—

Its Feline Hypertension Awareness Month๐Ÿฑ

This month we are reminding pet owners to be vigilant about their cats' health, especially as they age.

High blood pressure in cats, known as feline hypertension, can lead to serious health issues such as kidney disease, heart problems, and even blindness. It is crucial to monitor blood pressure regularly, especially in cats over the age of nine, as they are at a higher risk of developing this condition.

Starting blood pressure checks once your cat reaches 7 means we have the opportunity to catch it early and take steps, before damage is done.

Does your cat have high blood pressure? Let us know in the comments, we would love to hear your stories.

๐Ÿš€ Super Star Arrow! ๐Ÿš€
We had a very special visitor in the clinic todayโ€”meet Arrow, the energetic Border Collie puppy! Arrow was in for his very first round of vaccinations, and he handled them like a total pro whilst totally not half falling asleep on the table. ๐Ÿ’ค

This little guy isn't just any puppy; he has a big future ahead of him! Arrow is starting his journey to become a competitive Agility and Cani-cross star. With those focused eyes and that natural Border Collie drive, we have no doubt heโ€™ll be flying over hurdles and tearing up the trails in no time. ๐Ÿพ

Meet the lovely Mabel, who popped in today for her post-op checkup after being spayed. We think she might have found the most stylish way yet to handle the "cone of shame"โ€”by turning it into a "crown of no shame!"

We're wishing Mabel a super speedy recovery! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’›
