Rolo went to 2 homes in 2 days but the 2nd one was the perfect match 💪🙌👌Some people take on a rescue dog with the idea of them saving it and giving it a good life. When actually what they do they make a nervous or reactive dog worse by babying it and feeling sorry for it for the first few weeks waiting for the dog to settle in. Then the dog resource guards the human and turns into a nervous wreck and they bring the dog back to me worse than if was when if left. Then I have to use my pack to reset the dog again. It actually makes a dog worse bringing the dog into a new environment, new people while showing the dog no guidance no structure and letting a dog make its own boundaries. Allot of rescues dogs have something called “triggers” normally is a noise, an object or even as little as even fast movement. This send the dog into panic and without having the dog under control allows the dog to panic and do 1 of 2 things. Panic and hide or panic and bite. Either way the first 3 weeks are so important to build trust and boundary. But the first 3 days are even more important to respect the animals space, keep the dog on a lead at all times even if you think it’s friendly. This means you don’t have to startle the dog or grab him when his nervous. This give the dog time to settle in using a crate or a room where he is safe and comfortable and you can direct the dog rather than force the dog. You don’t want a dog that barks all night when you put him to bed. You don’t want a dog that hides when you pick up the lead. You don’t want a dog that refuses to move when told to. Or it could even be you have other animals/ kids or an unsecured garden etc etc. Please please please if I recommend doing something for first few days when you take a dog from me DO IT 🙌🤝 and your have results like this. Rolo first Foster’s went against my recommendation and they paid the price.
