Willow’s lesson this week, started of on her flexi lead around the field, rewarding her for recall before getting to the end of the lead, not pulling and some sitting waiting, eye contact before moving on. She did reallly well. Than we did some hunting, starting to make it a bit more difficult for her and hiding more than one article, so she start building some tenacity. Such a great little dog, who loves to learn. Equally she would not be an easy dog if she hadn’t come and got appropriate breed training straight away, as hunting without pentameters can lead to unwanted behaviours.

Today Molly came for a training session, we started off with some loose lead walking, around food bowls to ease her into working mode. We then tried a more fun way of getting Molly to be happier about using the placeboard which was very successful as it was less pressured for her. We then did some simple retrieves which were much better and more enthusiastic, the return being much better also. We finished with some hunting for a few hidden objects in the corner of the field. A lovely young dog who is becoming more confident with each session.

Kati came for one of her regular visits, today we decided to test her learning so far and do the food bowl game with some company, so I had my young Labrador out for this session too. We had some lovely connections while walking close to each other, we then did some sit stays , followed by a few retrieves, Kali needed a little distance for the throw so she could contain herself, but the both managed really well, we finished with a short run together, calling her away from my dog, this is something she has found really difficult, her owner has been working hard on this, she was was very successful, we kept any rough play form starting. A very pleasing session.

Last week saw Molly, Willow, Dotty and a new face Lottie, it was a really busy week for me with my dogs and also with my family, hence the late posting of last weeks lessons.
I stuck with a theme of bowls on the floor and the food only going in them when you reach them, hence no point in pulling to get there, some work on placeboards, working on retrieve patterns and a few short east retrieves. Finishing with some hunting for objects dogs like or food depending on their age and ability, some great sessions with everyone doing their best and making good progress.

Molly came for her second visit today, she was much happier today and more confident, which means she enjoyed her first visit. We worked on whistle recall, thinking about what will help with this when out and about. We introduced her to the placeboard. Lastly we hunted for some food which she thoroughly enjoyed. A good session with this lovely young dog.

Today Teagan came for a visit, I had set up for the lesson in a different way, hopefully to achieve what we needed which was confidence in doing straight lines out to the retrieve, picking it up without get distracted and hunting for it and coming back with the same enthusiasm as she went out. Then to go back to the same place trusting there is something there, so a blind retrieve. Today we had our game head on and she smashed it. Even when the dummy had fur on it. We finished with some hunting, we tried a couple of different ways and had better success the second time, with her properly engaged in her
Mission. A great session with the firecracker.

Yesterday Teagan, Finn and respective owners took ourselves up to the woods for some training, we did some retrieving, nothing too complicated today, we were looking for short successful trips out and back, not being tempted by the environment just keeping focused on the task in hand. Then we finished with some hunting in a smallish spot with varied undergrowth. A good session with things to work on, but both dogs working well. We finished of with having a cup of tea on the way home and a chat about what we would all like to achieve in the coming year.
Thanks for an interesting morning.

Little Willow is growing fast and coming along well, she wants to please and you find her at your feet looking earnestly up at you saying what’s next. Lead walking, placeboard, learning to come away from things you want when asked, starting hunting in an enclosed space, recall she just loves it all.

Kali came today for another of her regular visits, it’s keeping on being consistent with her. Today we started the session with her looking for a hunting disc as they are difficult to find, she loved this game and so will be a useful one to take out on her walks. She finds me so exciting so we worked on that disengagement for me, I was even more exciting than food, so I used myself instead of the food bowl, when she disengaged from me, she could come and say hello. She is a lovely young dog but sometimes has strong opinions on life.

Teagan came for a visit and we also did the grid as she is quite focused and prepared for this level or so we thought. Some days dogs don’t work so well , for whatever reasons. So it’s important on these days not to get frustrated. Stop what isn’t working, go back to basics if needed and work out where the weakness is so you can move on again, with more experienced dogs it make take a quick refresh, other times it may be a vital part was missed on their journey. It’s all a learning curve. Again end on a positive for owner and dog learn and move on.

Next up was Finn, they want to work towards Gundog Certificate on dummies, so I put out a grid for our session, we worked on that and some bits were good and some showed weaknesses that needed help, so we shortened distances and then had to isolate certain parts and work in them away from the grid and then come back. Always wanting to finish on a positive note . Good feedback for this session.
