🎃 Happy Halloween to all those celebrating! 👻

Halloween can be a ‘spooktacular’ time for many, but it can be a stressful experience for pets. Here are some helpful tips to keep them safe and happy during the Halloween season:

🐶 Reassure your pets if you’re dressing up. Masks and makeup might be fun for you, but they could scare your pets if they don't recognise you.

🚪 Keep pets secure as doors open and close for trick-or-treaters. Make sure they stay away from escape routes, and ensure they're microchipped just in case!

🎆 If bright lights or loud noises are anticipated, provide a safe space where your pets can retreat and feel comfortable.

🍬 Keep treats out of reach—chocolate, sweets, and anything with xylitol can be dangerous for pets.

🎃 Decorations add to the fun, but keep them out of reach. Avoid open flames, small lights, or anything that could tempt curious pets.

We hope you and your pets have a safe and 'fang-tastic' Halloween! 💚

Today is National Black Cat Day, and we're on the lookout for feline superheroes! 🦸

Just as in human medicine, vets rely on pet blood donations to ensure a readily available supply of safe blood products for pets who need transfusions or for use in emergency care. 🩸

We are urgently looking to recruit more cat blood donors to help save pets' lives. You can find out more about eligibility criteria and the pet blood donation process here >> https://bit.ly/3zIVq49

Even if your pet isn't eligible to donate but has a pet blood transfusion success story, we'd love it if you shared it with us in the comments below.

Does your dog suffer from seizures?

Seeing your pet go through a seizure can be scary and you should speak to your local veterinary practice immediately.

They might refer you to a referral centre, such as Davies, and, after tests, we may discover the seizures are caused by epilepsy or paroxysmal dyskinesia (PD).

We have some fact sheets on epilepsy and PD, which you can read:

Is your cat a superhero? 🐱🦸‍♀️

We are urgently looking to recruit cat blood donors who can help save the lives of pets like Nugget. 🩸👇

Nugget came to Davies Veterinary Specialists struggling with severe anaemia. The percentage of red blood cells in her bloodstream was critically low, having dropped to 8% (a healthy range is 27-50%). This meant that Nugget didn’t have the necessary red blood cells to deliver enough oxygen to her brain and the tissues around her body – a potentially life-threatening situation.

Thankfully, due to the generosity of cat blood donors, we were able to provide Nugget with a life-saving blood transfusion to increase her red blood cell count immediately. With additional treatment for the underlying diseases causing her anaemia, Nugget is now back on four paws and has made a full recovery. 🐾
