🐄 “Isn’t that rawhide?” — No! And there’s a BIG difference. 🐶

This is a question we get quite often at Woofingtons, especially from customers visiting us for the first time.

We sell lots of natural skin and hide chews — beef skin, buffalo skin, camel skin, lamb skin and more — and because some of them look similar to traditional rawhide, it’s easy to assume they’re the same thing.

But they’re very different products.

🚫 So what is traditional rawhide?

Traditional rawhide is commonly produced from animal hides generated by the leather industry. The outer portion is destined for leather production, while layers of the hide can be separated and used to manufacture rawhide chews.

The material can then undergo considerable processing — cleaning, treating, bleaching, colouring and flavouring depending on the manufacturer — before being pressed, rolled or shaped into the familiar bones and twists.

Some manufactured rawhide products may also use preservatives, flavourings, colourings or adhesives/glues during production.

By the time it reaches the finished product, it’s a long way from what we at Woofingtons would consider a natural chew.

Rawhide can also be poorly digestible and difficult for a dog’s digestive system to break down. As it becomes wet it can soften into large, gummy pieces, which may be swallowed and potentially cause choking or digestive obstruction.

That’s why we choose not to sell traditional rawhide products at Woofingtons.

🌿 So what’s different about our natural skin & hide chews?

They’re much simpler.

Rather than taking hide through the extensive manufacturing process associated with traditional rawhide, our natural chews are typically simply cleaned and dried animal skin or hide with minimal processing.

You’ll find things such as:

🐄 Beef skin
🐃 Buffalo skin
🐪 Camel skin
🐑 Lamb skin
🐐 Goat skin

They’re recognisable, animal-based chews without being turned into the traditional manufactured rawhide products you may remember seeing in pet shops.

So if you pick up one of our natural skin chews and think…

🤔 “Hang on… isn’t this rawhide?”

No — natural hide/skin and traditional rawhide aren’t the same thing.

And if you’re ever unsure about a chew on our shelves, just ask us. We’re always happy to explain what it is, where it comes from and what you’re giving your dog. 🐾🧡
