This is a sad case, which the owner kindly let me photograph to share. In this beautiful eye the iris is diffusely swollen, especially laterally where you can see the red discolouration. The other eye was similar. This bilateral uveitis was due to multicentric lymphoma, a cancer of the lymph system. You don't often see subtle lesions like this, as dogs normally have dark coloured irises, so the red colour change is less obvious. You can also note the mildly irregular pupil.

I know not everyone shares my tastes, but here's a fun case! Poor Brodie took the "look before you leap" advice too far and didn't close his eyes when dashing through a hedge. The inevitable thorn had fully penetrated the cornea, but was happily coaxed back out with a suture preplaced to plug the leak. The last photo shows his eye a couple of days later - ready for the next adventure!

One more quick one, because it's a been a while! Lens luxation in cats is normally secondary to other changes in the eye, whereas dogs can have a primary genetic problem that causes it. Distant direct ophthalmoscopy is a good way to highlight the dropped lens inside the eye.

Cherry eye (or Pr*****ed Nictitans Gland) is common in young dogs of some breeds. Staffies like Nyla aren't at very high risk, but it does happen! Thankfully, surgery is normally curative and her long term outcome should be good. The pink blob is a tear-producing gland, and removing it might increase Nyla's risk of dry eye later in life. So we carefully put it back where it should be! She'll have to wear a cone for a few days, but has a good chance of healing without complication.

We've had to say goodbye to a much-loved family member last week. Denzel Baird has been my constant and tireless friend since he came into Hay Vets as a skinny, half-grown stray in Spring 2008. He was an unusual terrier, more likely to mother a small animal than worry it, never straying, but still dogged when playing with a ball! He's been with me for (almost) my whole veterinary career and taught me the importance of getting out in the weather, morning and evening, without fail. A good dog makes your life much better, and Denzel was a very good dog.

Ain't no party like an ophtho party! Another great conference from the BrAVO committee - a curated blend of practical, accessible teaching from a multidisciplinary perspective. And, of course, a bit of a hooley!

It's a pleasure to work with such a highly trained and efficient team, but it pales with the joy of giving sight to a pup. Poppy had cataracts from birth but now, at over 2 years old, is learning to play fetch and ran straight to the sea when she went to the beach. The stories of her new experiences are heartwarming!
